Thomas Pierret is a Lecturer in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of Religion and State in Syria: The Sunni Ulama from Coup to Revolution (Cambridge, 2013), and the co-editor of Ethnographies of Islam: Ritual Performances and Everyday Practices (Edinburgh, 2012).
