On 3 May 2014, former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice backed out of giving Rutgers University's commencement speech amid growing opposition among the school's students, staff, and faculty. Rice, one of the architects of the US war in Iraq, was not only due to give an address to the graduating cohort. She was also to receive an honorary law degree.
