The UN released its report, "Secretary-General’s Panel of Inquiry on the 31 May 2010 Flotilla Incident" on Friday, 2 September 2011. The report addressed issues relating to Israel’s attack on the Mavi Marmara – which left 9 Turkish civilians dead, and some 55 others wounded – and concluded, amongst other things, that Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip is lawful and that Israel’s attack on the Mavi Marmara was justified, but involved excessive force. Daragh Murray is an IRCHSS Government of Ireland Scholar, and PhD Candidate at the Irish Centre for Human Rights. His research focuses upon the law of armed conflict, international human rights law, and the status of armed opposition groups. He is also International Legal Officer at the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights.
