Khalil al-Anani خليل العناني

Khalil al-Anani is a scholar in Middle East Politics at the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University, UK. His area of expertise covers: religion and politics, Islamist movements, ideologies and identities, sociology of religion, Arab politics, and Egyptian politics. He is a senior researcher at al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies. He was previously a visiting fellow at Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution and a visiting scholar at University of Birmingham.

Al-Anani has authored and co-authored several books (in Arabic and English) covering a wide array of Middle East subjects including: Elections and Transition in the Middle East in the Post-Revolutionary Era (forthcoming), Religion in Egypt’s Public Sphere after the Revolution (2011), Hamas: from Opposition to Power (2009), The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt: Gerontocracy Fighting against Time” (2008 and the second edition 2010).

In addition, al-Anani is a frequent writer at many leading Arab newspapers including: al-Hayat, Al-Masry Al-Youm, Al-Ahram Weekly, and Daily News Egypt. He received a Master’s degree in Political Science from Cairo University and is pursuing a Ph.D. at School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University, UK.
