War and trade are the mainstays of global power relations. But beyond the visible circuits of capital, goods and the bodies of workers and soldiers, and upstaged by the sanguinary violence of war, are the invisible sinews that make both commerce and war-fighting possible. In this lecture, Professor Khalili will be reflecting on the foundational role of maritime transportation and logistics in the transformation of the Middle East into a global node of war and trade.
Laleh Khalili is a professor of Middle East politics at SOAS. She is the author of Heroes and Martyrs of Palestine: The Politics of National Commemoration (Cambridge 2007) and Time in the Shadows: Confinement in Counterinsurgencies (Stanford 2013), the editor of Modern Arab Politics (Routledge 2008) and co-editor (with Jillian Schwedler) of Policing and Prisons in the Middle East: Formations of Coercion (Hurst/Oxford 2010).
