The Arab American Educational Foundation (AAEF) Lecture Series presents:
Beyond Exceptionalism: Institution Building and Political Organization in Early Independence Lebanon
A Lecture by Ziad Abu-Rish
Much of the academic literature and popular commentary on Lebanon identifies its history of state building and economic development as exceptional. This is particularly so in reference to its post-World War II political economy when compared to those of other successor state of the Ottoman Empire such as Syria, Iraq, and Jordan. This presentation will explore the broad contours of state formation, economic development, and social mobilizaiton in Lebanon during the early years of indepencence (1943-1955) to interrogate such assumptions and shed light on an often neglected period of history in Lebanon.
