Muslim Brotherhood would accept that members of the ruling military council be granted immunity from legal or criminal liability to guarantee a peaceful handover of power and avoid "trouble" for the country.
The Muslim Brotherhood’s official spokesperson Mahmoud Ghozlan on Monday told the “Haqeeqa” talk show on private satellite channel Dream TV that the group might support a scenario whereby the members of the military council are granted immunity from prosecution in return for a peaceful handover of power.
Ghozlan said that such an initiative would save the country “trouble” in the sense of escalation in violence and instability. He added that the Brotherhood were not advocating such a scenario, but if other political forces were in agreement, they would support the idea.
According to Ghozlan, forgoing the right to hold members of the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) accountable for the recent violations would be the “lesser of two evils” in being preferable to choosing the possibility of escalating clashes in the future. Ghozlan added that the families of the martyrs could be compensated financially instead.
He further stated that the comparison between the ousted president Hosni Mubarak and SCAF members is inaccurate, since "there is proof that Mubarak ordered the killings of protesters" while this is not the case with regard to the recent killings.
According to the Ministry of Health, at least seventeen died during the most recent clashes near the Cabinet; medical reports revealed that most of those were killed by live ammunition.
