[The following statement was issued in Arabic by the Young Baghdad Society on 12 June 2012.]
Toward a Civil and Tolerant Iraq
A few months after the founding of “Young Baghdad,” with the participation of a group of Iraqis from various fields, the society launched its first campaign under the title “The National Campaign Against Sectarianism.
While the signatories of this statement recognize the devastating effects of sectarianism on the structure of Iraqi society and its political elites, they yearn for a civil and tolerant Iraq, worthy of the dreams of the martyrs who died on the road to liberty and of the ambitions of this great people.
In a virtual meeting that lasted for hours, Iraqi artists and writers living all over the world, convened to issue a statement about these difficult times our country is going through where sectarian tensions are at an apex. The signatories of this statement agreed on the following main points which they address to our people inside and outside Iraq.
- Our Iraqi identity brings us together. We are citizens of Iraq and are not subjects of anyone. We are Iraqis and Iraq is our home, irrespective of our religions, sects and ethnicities. Sectarianism is racism and the laws of the civilized world punish sectarian and racist practices. We will protect Iraq’s future by belonging to Iraq and reinforcing citizenship. Our sub-identities- our inherited sects and ethnicities- reinforce our belonging to Iraq and Iraq alone. It is for the sake of our children’s future that we must protect the democratic experience from the plague of sectarianism. The greatest crime in our country is shedding the blood of another Iraqi and we have to work together to stop the bleeding.
- The future is drawn by our young ones. Therefore we call for paying greater attention to school curricula at the earliest stages. Let us teach our children to belong to Iraq and nothing but Iraq. Let us reconsider curricula that include sectarian references, even if they were put for non-sectarian considerations. We call on our brothers and sisters who work in the field of education to support The National Campaign Against Sectarianism with simple and possible means. Your work will lead to a tolerant Iraq where we no longer hear stories about death and destruction.
- We call for adopting the culture of the separation of state and religion and for placing the respect of the citizen, irrespective of his or her affiliation, above all else.
- We address the country’s politicians whose conflicts have deepened sectarian wounds and call on all to place the country’s interest before the interest of any sect in any decision.
- We call for legislating a law that prohibits and punishes questions about one’s religion, affiliation or gender.
- We will continue our activities that are aimed at fighting sectarianism through all available peaceful means. Cognizant of its effects on the country’s reality and its future, we hope that popular and official initiatives join this campaign. In this regard, we call on our brothers and sisters in civil society organizations and syndicates and on luminaries to support our campaign by any possible means.
- “Young Baghdad” is a free group that is unaffiliated with any political or other party. It includes a large number of national elites from various fields. The group will continue in its campaign which strives to expose sectarian thought and those who promote it to maintain power or wealth. Our goal is the unity of the Iraqi people.
- We call on the members of the Iraqi parliament to review the articles pertaining to sectarianism in the Iraqi constitution and to amend them so that they are in tune with an open, civil, and tolerant society and to eliminate any reference to the contrary. We also call on them to legislate a genuine and explicit law punishing any person who commits a sectarian act.
- We appeal to our people all over Iraq. The group is not against the diversity of sects in Iraq, but it warns against oppressing the other on the basis of their sect. Individual freedoms are protected and all citizens have the right to choose their affiliation to a sect, but without this choice demeaning the other whether by using symbols and references or by violence and counter violence.
- The members of the group call for liberation the Iraqi individual economically from the government’s control so that state institutions, which are the property of all the people, are independent from the sectarian tendencies of the ruling parties.
- The members of the group call on all those working in audiovisual and print media outlets to abandon sectarianism in their institutions and to adopt a nationalist discourse. We hope that Iraqi media becomes vigilant and monitors the performance of politicians and others in this regard.
- The society’s members pay respect to Iraq’s martyrs, especially the victims of sectarian violence who died because of cheap deals by detested sectarian parties, or for espousing extremist thought against which we firmly stand for the sake of the life of the Iraqi human, who is our most precious possession.
- While the group reaffirms that it is not a political party and is not against a particular political entity, nor does it seek any political gains, it believes that certain fundamentals must exist in social and political work, chief amongst these is fighting sectarianism and ensuring that it does not become an established social structure.
- Group members call for thinking seriously about popular activities to support the campaign all over Iraq. Group members stress that it paramount for artists and those working in the fields of education and media to undertake such activities.
- Let us all remember the staggering numbers of widows, orphans, disabled, and mothers grieving because of sectarian violence. Let us raise our voices saying: Enough silence over this heinous crime! For those and for our life and future, let us stand together against the culture of sectarian oppression and against imposing one color and against sectarian references in the speech of politicians and people. This country is ours all and it will not prosper and grow unless we all raise our hands today to protest the ongoing project of sectarian slaughter.

جمعية “بغداد الفتاة” تطلق الحملة الوطنية لمناهضة الطائفية
نحو عراق مدني ومتسامح
بعد نحو شهور من تأسيس جمعية "بغداد الفتاة"، بمشاركة نخبة من المبدعين العراقيين بشتى حقول المعرفة، دشنت الجمعية حملتها الأولى التي أطلقت عليها الحملة الوطنية لمناهضة الطائفية.
وإذ يرى الموقعون على هذا البيان، الآثار المدمرة للطائفية على بنية المجتمع العراقي، وعلى نخبه السياسية، فإنهم يتوقون إلى عراق مدني ومتسامح يليق بأحلام الشهداء الذين قضوا على طريق الحرية، ويليق بطموحات هذا الشعب العريق.
وبعد لقاء دام ساعات، عبر شبكة الأنترنت، إلتقى مبدعون عراقيون يقيمون في مختلف أنحاء العالم، ليقولوا كلمة في هذه الظروف الصعبة التي تمر بها بلادنا حيث التوتر والتصعيد الطائفي على أوجه. وخلص الموقعون على هذا البيان إلى النقاط الأساسية الآتية، والتي يوجهونها أولاً إلى أبناء شعبنا العراقي داخل وخارج البلاد.
١. هويتنا العراقية تجمعنا – نحن مواطنون عراقيون للعراق ولسنا رعية لأحد.. نحن عراقيون على اختلاف ادياننا وطوائفنا وقومياتنا والعراق بيتنا. الطائفية عنصرية و قوانين العالم المتحضر تعاقب على السلوك العنصري والطائفي. نحمي مستقبل العراق بالانتماء الى العراق وتعزيز المواطنة. هوياتنا الفرعية –طوائفنا الموروثة وقومياتنا -تعزز انتماءنا للعراق وحده. من اجل مستقبل الابناء نحمي التجربة الديموقراطية من وباء الطائفية. دم العراقي على العراقي هو الجرم الأكبر في بلادنا، وعلينا أن نعمل معاً من أجل وقف النزيف.
٢. إن المستقبل يرسمه صغارنا، ولهذا ندعو للعناية بمناهج التعليم ابتداءً من أول المراحل الدراسية. لنعلم صغارنا الانتماء للعراق ولا شيء سوى العراق. ولنعد النظر في المناهج المدرسية التي تتضمن إشارات طائفية، حتى لو كانت تلك الإشارات قد وضعت لاعتبارات غير طائفية. وبهذه المناسبة، ندعو أخوتنا وأخواتنا الذين يشتغلون في التربية والتعليم، إلى مؤازرة "الحملة الوطنية لمناهضة الطائفية" بالعديد من الوسائل البسيطة والممكنة. عملكم هذا سيقود إلى عراق متسامح لا نسمع فيه قصصاً عن الموت والخراب.
٣. ندعو إلى تبني ثقافة فصل الدين عن الدولة.. ووضع احترام المواطن فوق كل اعتبار مهما كانت انتماءته.
٤. ونتوجه بالخطاب إلى ساسة البلاد، الذين عمقت صراعاتهم الجراح الطائفية، وندعو الجميع إلى وضع مصلحة البلاد قبل مصلحة الطائفة في أي قرار يتخذ.
٥. الدعوة لسن قانون يحرم السؤال عن الدين، والانتماء والجنس، بل ويجرمه.
٦. سنستمر في فعالياتنا التي تهدف إلى مناهضة الطائفية عبر الوسائل السلمية المتاحة. ونأمل أن تنظم إلى هذه الحملة فعاليات شعبية ورسمية لما لها من اثر على واقع ومستقبل البلاد.. وندعو في هذا الصدد، الأخوة والأخوات في منظمات المجتمع المدني، والنقابات، والشخصيات، إلى دعم حملتنا بأي وسيلة ممكنة.
٧. إن مجموعة "بغداد الفتاة" هي مجموعة حرة غير مرتبطة بأي حزب سياسي أو غيره. وتضم نخبة كبيرة من النخب الوطنية في شتى الحقول. وستستمر المجموعة في حملتها الرامية إلى تعرية الفكر الطائفي، والذين يروجون له حفاظاً على سلطة أو جاه. وحدة الشعب العراقي هدفنا.
٨. ندعو السادة والسيدات في البرلمان العراقي إلى مراجعة الفقرات الخاصة بالطائفة في الدستور العراقي، وتعديلها لتناسب مجتمعاً مدنياً منفتحاً ومتسامحاً، وحذف أي إشارة بعكس ذلك. وكذلك سن قانون واضح وحقيقي يعاقب كل شخص يمارس فعلاً طائفياً.
٩. ونتوجه إلى أهلنا في مختلف أنحاء العراق بالقول: إن المجموعة ليست ضد التنوع الطائفي في العراق، ولكنها تحذر من قمع الآخر لصفته الطائفية. الحريات الفردية مصانة، ومن حق المواطنين كلهم اختيار انتماءهم الطائفي، ولكن دون أن يمثل ذلك الخيار انتقاصاً من الآخر المختلف. سواء أكان من خلال استخدام الرموز والشعارات أو من خلال العنف والعنف المضاد.
١٠. يدعو أعضاء المجموعة إلى تحرير الفرد العراقي اقتصاديا من سيطرة الحكومة حتى تكون مؤسسات الدولة، والتي هي ملك لجميع طوائف الشعب، مستقلة عن سيطرة الاتجاهات الطائفية للاحزاب الحاكمة.
١١. يدعو أعضاء المجموعة الأخوة الإعلاميين من الذين يعملون في مختلف القنوات الإعلامية (مرئية ومسموعة ومقروءة) إلى نبذ الطائفية في مؤسساتهم وتبني الخطاب الوطني. ونرجو أن يكون الإعلام العراقي رقيباً على أداء السياسيين وغير السياسيين في هذا الخصوص.
١٢. يترحم أعضاء الجمعية على شهداء العراق، وخاصة ضحايا العنف الطائفي، الذين قضوا نتيجة متاجرات رخيصة لجهات طائفية بغيضة، أو لاعتناقهم فكراً متطرفاً ندعو للوقوف بحزم ضده من أجل حياة الإنسان العراقي، الذي هو أغلى ما نملك.
١٣. وإذ تؤكد المجموعة مرة أخرى على أنها ليست طرفاً سياسياً، ولا تستهدف جهة سياسية ما، وليس لها سعي للتكسب السياسي، فإنها ترى ضرورة وجود ثوابت في العمل السياسي والمجتمعي، ومن أبرز تلك الثوابت محاربة الطائفية، والحيلولة دون تحولها إلى بنية مجتمعية راسخة .
١٤. يدعو أعضاء المجموعة إلى التفكير جدياً بفعاليات شعبية مساندة للحملة في مختلف أنحاء العراق، ويشدد أعضاء المجموعة على أهمية أن يتصدى لمثل هذه الفعاليات الفنانون والعاملون في القطاع التعليمي والتربوي والإعلاميون.
١٥. لنتذكر جميعاً تلك الأعداد الهائلة من الأرامل، واليتامى، ومن المعاقين والأمهات الثكالى بسبب العنف الطائفي، ولنرفع أصواتنا عالية أن كفى سكوتاً على هذه الجريمة المروعة. من أجل هؤلاء.. ومن أجل حياتنا ومستقبلنا، لنقف معاً ضد ثقافة قمع الآخر المختلف طائفياً، وضد فرض اللون الواحد، وضد الإشارات الطائفية في أحاديث الساسة والناس.. هذه البلاد بلادنا جميعاً.. وهي لن تعمر وتنمو إذا لم نرفع أيدينا احتجاجاً اليوم على مشروع ذبحنا الطائفي المستمر.
