Children and non-Muslims Only
Jul 22 2012

This image has been circulating among Moroccan online users. The sign reads, "Notice to our customers. During Ramadan, only children and non-Muslims can be served in the restaurant. All other orders will be served strictly for carry-out."

So what? In other Muslim countries, restaurants aren't even open during the fasting hours, and no one is allowed to eat, drink or smoke in public. I never had a problem with that as a non-Muslim.

This is standard practice everywhere in Morocco, and I believe it's the law. A friend of mine tried to order in McDonald's three years ago during Ramadan and was told exactly the same thing. At least this year, they're putting the policy in the open for all to see.
The other thing to keep in mind is that in Morocco, if you have an Arab name or look Moroccan, it's automatically assumed that you're a Muslim. You can tell them you're Jewish, Christian, or atheist and you still won't get anything to eat — while your Western friend standing next to you will be served.
Better to close the restaurants entirely during Ramadan, IMO, than to have this hypocritical double standard. Or eliminate the law / custom that judges a person's religious belief by their personal appearance?
