Sectarianism in the Contemporary Middle East: Religious and Political Discourses

The Centre for Academic Shi`a Studies is pleased to announce its third annual conference titled "Sectarianism in the Contemporary Middle East: Religious and Political Discourses," which will be held at the Al-Khoei Foundation in London on Saturday 13 April 2013.
CASS encourages new research trajectories based on historical, sociological, political, religious, and anthropological studies and welcomes scholars and specialists to submit proposals that deal with any of the following conference themes:
- Citizenship & Sectarian Identity in the Modern Middle East;
- Modern Islamist Movements: Pan-Islamism & Sectarian Belonging;
- Sunni-Shia Coexistence: Positive and Negative Encounters;
- Religious Discourse and Sectarian Tensions;
- Sunni & Shia Literature: Portrayals of the Other;
- Muslims and Sectarian Jurisprudence: Between Theory & Practice;
- Religious Education: Between Preaching & Teaching;
- Sectarianism and New Media: Roots, Rhetoric & Discourse;
- Sectarian Violence: Political Manipulation or Religious Conflict?
Terms and Conditions
- Abstracts should be no more than 300 words, submitted as a word document. The closing date for proposals is 31 December 2012. Abstracts should be sent to info@shiaresearch.com with "Abstract for Third Annual Conference" as the subject title.
- The organising committee will review abstracts and decisions will be made on 30 January 2013. Chosen applicants will be notified the next day.
- We are aiming to publish a selection of the conference papers as part of a special edition on sectarianism and will be expecting to receive the final drafts by 30 June 2013.
