Letter Concerning Revocation of Citizenship of 31 Bahraini Nationals
[The following letter was written by the Committee on Academic Freedom of the Middle East Studies Association of North America (MESA).] 11 December 2012 His Excellency Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid Al Khalifa Minister of the Interior Ministry of the Interior P.O. Box 13 Kingdom of Bahrain Your Excellency Shaikh Rashid, I write to you on behalf the Middle East Studies Association and its Committee on Academic Freedom to express our deep concern over the revocation of citizenship on 7 November of thirty-one Bahraini nationals. We are especially concerned that this punishment was extended to academics, particularly to Professor Abdulhadi Khalaf. Dr. ...

In his second attempt to obtain United Nations recognition of Palestine as a state, on 29 November 2012 Palestinian Authority (PA) president Mahmoud Abbas requested the General Assembly to accept the bid for non-member observer state status. An overwhelming majority of countries—138 of them—voted yes. The vote’s implications are largely symbolic for the time being, but it does mean that “Palestine” signifies the Palestinian territories occupied by Israel in 1967. Now, rather than “Palestine” signifying a nation, it can be considered an official state within the parameters of international law. The aftermath of the vote will demonstrate that even decades after most ...

[The following statement was issued by the Bahrain Center for Human Rights and the Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights on 7 November 2012.] The Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights (BYSHR) and the Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR) express their grave concern over the King of Bahrain’s decision to revoke Bahraini citizenship from thirty-one individuals. This move is reminiscent of past government crackdowns in the 1980s, when the past Emir, Salman bin Isa AlKhalifa, revoked the citizenship of a number of citizens. A cyber vigilante known by the twitter account @7areghum (which is reportedly linked to the Bahraini authorities) wrote the names of 31 ...

Linda Herrera, “Youth and Citizenship in the Digital Age: A View from Egypt.” Harvard Educational Review (Fall 2012). Jadaliyya (J): What made you write this article? Linda Herrera (LH): Schools once served as temples of citizenship education, but this is no longer the case. I came to the realization of the diminished role of schooling in the lives of young Egyptians during a visit to a public high school in 2006. I arrived at a school in the Delta in the middle of the day to interview teachers about curriculum reforms. What I found was a school populated by the teaching and administrative staff but without students! It turned out that with end of year exams ...

Although the Beer el-Sabe (Beer Sheva) Municipality and the local Islamic council eventually compromised and moved the tables selling wine at the Beer Sheva Wine Festival (see Adalah’s Letter to the AG: Stop the Wine Festival) outside of the Big Mosque courtyard, the festival created a general wave of angry reactions among the Arab public. Arab Palestinian politicians and the Arab League condemned the decision to hold the wine festival in the Mosque courtyard for the past several years. The issue received wide coverage in the local and international Arabic, Hebrew, and English media throughout the last month. However, disrespect for the Big Mosque must be seen in ...

Click here to read Tariq Tell's rejoinder to this response.] Political agitation and social dissidence have become daily occurrences in Jordan. Strikes, demonstrations, marches, sit-ins, denunciatory public statements, public property destruction episodes, altercations and violent clashes with the police and baltagiyya, and cabinet turnover: events such as these have become the daily staple of news coming from Jordan. All of this would qualify as a form of ...

In February 2012, the Israeli Supreme Court struck down the Tal Law, which for the last ten years afforded an exemption to the religious ultra-Orthodox from serving in the military or national/civil service. As the court found the law unconstitutional, the Knesset would not be able to renew the law in its current form. Following the decision, the Knesset formed a “Committee to Equalize the Burden,” headed by Knesset Member Yohanan Plesner (Kadima), to determine how to enlist all sectors of Israeli society, including Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel, into army service and/or national civil service. Although the Plesner Committee did not directly recommend imposing ...

Keep Reading »Signs of New Feminism? Promises of Morocco's February 20
The absence of established figures from feminist organizations is one of the most striking features of the 20 February movement in Morocco. Nevertheless, the movement shows modes of engagement with feminism, such as the call for gender equality and a practice of parity, which suggest that feminist discourse has not only penetrated the social imaginary of younger generations of activists, but also informed their practices. Signs of new gender arrangements were already visible in the first calls for ...

It is mid-August and the heat in the eastern occupied West Bank is oppressive. The air is dry, wind whips up dust, and sand makes its way into the crevices of shoes, pores, and hair. In between this matrix of settlements and outposts are the stretches of makeshift Palestinian encampments – tin shacks and tents that look as though they would fly away with the slightest gust. Seam zones are sections of Palestinian land within the occupied Palestinian territory (OPT) which fall between the illegal Israeli Annexation Wall and the 1949 Armistice Line (The Green Line) and are therefore severed from the OPT. These swaths of land have been designated by Israel as closed military areas. Access to these isolated areas is controlled by an Israeli-controlled permit system thereby severely restricting Palestinian access to their lands. Statistics suggest that approximately 50,000 ...
