An Open Letter of Response to CRIF (Conseil Représentatif des Institutions Juives de France)

[Logo for CRIF's upcoming convention, 13 January 2013. Image from crif.org]

An Open Letter of Response to CRIF (Conseil Représentatif des Institutions Juives de France): I am shocked and saddened that your organization would label me as an anti-Semite and self-hating Jew. It is utterly defamatory, and such allegations are entirely based on distortions of what I believe and what I have done. To confuse my criticisms of Israel with self-hatred of myself as a Jew or with hatred of Jews is a calumny. I have long been a critic of American foreign policy but that does not make me anti-American; it is freedom of conscience and its integral link with freedom of expression that is the core defining reality of a genuinely democratic ...

Extreme Makeover? (II): The Withering of Arab Jerusalem

[ICG logo. Image from crisisgroup.org]

[The following report was issued by International Crisis Group on 20 December 2012.]  Extreme Makeover? (II): The Withering of Arab Jerusalem  Executive Summary  For many Arab East Jerusalemites, the battle for their city is all but lost. Settlements have hemmed in their neighbourhoods, which have become slums in the midst of an expanding Jewish presence; trade with the West Bank has been choked off by the Separation Barrier and checkpoints; organised political life has been virtually eradicated by the clampdown on Palestinian institutions; and their social and economic deprivation is rendered the more obvious by proximity to better-off Jewish ...

Why Chuck Hagel Is Irrelevant

[Senator Chuck Hagel shakes hands with Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta at the Willard Intercontinental Washington Hotel, Washington D.C, 9 May 2012. Photo by Glenn Fawcett/Flickr.]

The latest non-scandal scandalizing the American commentariat is whether Barack Obama will be able to nominate former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel as his new Secretary of Defense. The narrative is that the Zionist lobby is eager to scuttle Hagel’s nomination because he has uttered one too many words “critical” of Israel, and displayed too many sentiments suspected of being contrary to the agenda of the lobby: namely, destroying Iran. The narrative is true enough. That the lobby does not want Hagel is clear, and his nomination would be a defeat for the lobby’s right wing. Still, it is barely a scandal, except in the sense that it is scandalous how narrow the ...

[The following report was issued by International Crisis Group on 22 November 2012.]  Israel and Hamas: Fire and Ceasefire in a New Middle East  Executive Summary and Recommendations There they went again – or did they? The war between Israel and Hamas had all the hallmarks of a tragic movie watched several times too many: airstrikes pounding Gaza, leaving death and destruction in their wake; rockets launched aimlessly from the Strip, spreading terror on their path; Arab states expressing outrage at Israel’s brute force; Western governments voicing understanding for its exercise of self-defence. The actors were faithful to the script: Egypt negotiated a ...

New Texts Out Now: Mark LeVine and Gershon Shafir, Struggle and Survival in Palestine/Israel

[Cover of

Mark LeVine and Gershon Shafir, editors. Struggle and Survival in Palestine/Israel. Berkeley: University of California Press, 2012. Jadaliyya (J): What made you write this book? Mark LeVine (ML): I first came up with the idea for the book after teaching Terry Burke's seminal volume Struggle and Survival in the Modern Middle East in a modern Middle East lecture course during the same quarter I was teaching my Israel/Palestine course. I realized that while there were very important advances in scholarship on the conflict and its histories, students were easily overwhelmed by the complexity of the historical processes involved in the new narratives. Seeing how ...
