Philo- and Anti-Semitism in Germany: Interview with Gilbert Achcar

[

This interview is part of a longer one conducted with Gilbert Achcar in Berlin on 18 and 20 May discussing his book, The Arabs and the Holocaust which was translated into German in May 2012. The interview  explores intersecting paradigms and predicaments of racism and colonialism for a post-war German nation. Specifically, it touches upon some of the historical roots and contemporary debates in Germany, concerning anti-Semitism and philo-Semitism and the way both phenomena have played out in modern German politics until today.  Anna Younes (AY): As someone who was socialized and grew up in Lebanon, it is not immediately ...

One Year of Hope

[A building in Qusair, Homs. Photographed by revolutionary artist and martyr, Ashraf Al-Ahmad. Image courtesy of SNN.]

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way — in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.   When I was in secondary school in Aleppo, one of the ...

Is Qatar's Foreign Policy Sustainable?

[Doha, Qatar. Image from Creative Commons/Google Images]

Qatar, home to only 225,000 natives and 1.7 million foreign workers, has emerged as an influential regional actor in recent years. Emir Shaikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has ruled Qatar since 1995, when he replaced his father in a bloodless palace coup, and has pursued an ambitious foreign policy for his statelet. Natural resource wealth, ownership of Al Jazeera, and a carefully constructed web of foreign alliances have allowed Doha to project itself throughout the Middle East.  The nature of Qatar’s foreign policy is the subject of some debate. Certain analysts contend that Qatar conducts a foreign policy uninfluenced by any ideology and that its only concerns ...

Literature in the Oil Age: Goat Days

[Tight lines at Dubai labor camp. Image by author]

From that moment, like the maniyan fly, an unknown fear began to envelop my mind. An irrational doubt began to grip me, a feeling that this journey was not leading me to the Gulf life that I had been dreaming about and craving for. The Gulf I had learned about from so many people was not like this. A whiff of danger. Nothing clear. –Goat Days (Aadujeevitam)                                              ...

[Ali Abdullah Saleh and Sultan bin Abdulaziz. Image from www.menafn.com]

Understanding the Prospects and Challenges for Another Popular Intifada in Sudan

[Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir at an African Union summit. Image by Jesse B. Awalt. From Wikimedia Commons.]

While the attention of the Western and Arab media has focused on the historic victory of the Muslim Brotherhood’s presidential candidate in Egypt, street protests of a scale not witnessed for two decades continued into their second week in Khartoum and other major Sudanese cities. Anti-government protests, initially led by students from the University of Khartoum, have inspired similar nation-wide demonstrations in al-Obeid, Kosti, al-Gadaref, Port Sudan, Wad Medani, and Atbara. They began on June 16th with courageous female students at the University of Khartoum’s downtown campus taking to the streets chanting “no, no to higher prices” and “freedom, freedom.” The ...

Israeli Arms Sales to Rwandan Genocidaires Should Not Be Surprising

A 24 June 2012 article in Maariv brought to light some new information about arms shipments from Israel to Rwanda during the 1994 genocide. Most of the basics about these transactions have been publicly available since 1999 when Brian Wood and Johan Peleman published The Arms Fixers. They reported, “Seven large cargoes of small arms worth $6.5 million were flown from Tirana [Albania] and Tel Aviv between mid-April and mid-July 1994 to the [Interahamwe] forces as they carried out the genocide, even during ...

Libya, Impunity, and the International Criminal Court

Last week, four staffers of the International Criminal Court (the ICC) who were part of Seif Gaddafi’s legal defense team were taken into custody in Libya on allegations that they were functioning as a conduit for conspiracy between Gaddafi and his political allies. The ICC is now plunged into a messy battle seeking release of its staff while moving forward with the Seif case in ways that strain for legitimacy within Libya. The local Zintan council leadership responsible for the detention of the legal ...

In Search of a New Political Language

In the first round of the 2012 presidential election, more than thirty-nine percent of Egyptians voted for candidates representing neither the Muslim Brotherhood nor former President Hosni Mubarak's regime. The combined vote of Hamdeen Sabbahi and Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh, the biggest winners in this category, together with those of leftist candidates Khaled Ali and Abul Ezz al-Hariry, is substantially more than those who voted for Mohamed Morsy or for both Ahmed Shafiq and Amr Moussa combined. The Politics of Image: The Bedouins of South Sinai

They live within Egyptian borders, they carry Egyptian identification cards, some of them even serve in the Egyptian army, but to the majority of Egyptians, the Bedouins of the Sinai Peninsula remain the widely enigmatic “others,” if not exotic creatures of the desert then villainous outlaws of the steppes. To the tourist, the Bedouin conjures up a tent that flutters in the wind, huts lining up the coastline, sage tea by the fireplace, and a huge tray of mensif, their trademark rice and goat dish; to the ...

Ajamindustry

It is problematic enough that Fouad Ajami repeats much of the reductionist arguments about all things Arab in his new book on Syria's rebellion, but then the New York Times must stumble upon this book, and review it. I will not attempt to review the book itself, for critiquing Mr. Ajami has become like critiquing Fox News: there is no gain. Instead, I will seize the opportunity and examine the review in the Times, as it reproduces not only Ajami's faulty—though always well-written—analysis, but it also ...
