Settler Colonialism, Normalization, and Resistance at the Zionist Borders

[Ben Gurion Airport. Image from WikiMedia Commons.]

A visit to Palestine in April has led me to reflect on Israel’s border practices and how they relate to the performance of Israel as a settler colonial state. I have also considered whether by subjecting myself to these border practices I am contributing to the reproduction of Israel’s sovereignty over the Occupied Palestinian Territory. In other words, is travelling to Palestine an act of normalization of Israel’s occupation or of solidarity with Palestinians under occupation? This past April, other visitors to Palestine directly highlighted this question. Palestine solidarity activists from Europe attempted, for the second time, to explicitly visit the West Bank as ...

The Awan Quartet: Forging New Ground in Palestine

[The Awan Quartet. Image via Facebook.]

Every two years, the Edward Said National Conservatory of Music in Palestine organizes a nationwide music competition covering many musical categories and age groups. This is the only competition of its kind at the “national” level, and has been attracting new talent and motivating music students since 1999. This year’s competition was held in March 2012 at the conservatory’s campuses in Jerusalem, Ramallah, and Gaza (linked via video conferencing). A recently formed ensemble called the “Awan Quartet” snatched the first prize of 2000 dollars in the Group Performance category with an original composition called “Nahawand.” Tareq Abboushi, a Palestinian musician, ...

Briefing Note: Adalah's Representation of Arab Knesset Members--Protecting the Right to Political Participation

[MK Mohammed Barakeh at a demonstration against settlements in Hebron. Image from ActiveStills.]

Adalah is currently representing four Arab members of the Knesset (MKs): Haneen Zoabi, Dr. Ahmad Tibi, SaNaffaa, and Mohammed Barakeh. The political leadership of the Palestinian Arab minority in Israel faces sustained and severe attacks and harassment from Israeli government officials and incitement from extreme right-wing MKs. Arab elected representatives have been stripped of their parliamentary privileges, have had their immunity lifted, and now two members are facing criminal indictments for their legitimate and protected political activity. In another case, the Knesset refused to permit the introduction of legislation submitted by an Arab MK concerning the ...

I have been waiting for the right time to complete this series, but matters kept getting worse, and we are now looking into the abyss. But this is not an article about what is happening in Syria today; rather, it is about some of the discursive battles among parts of the political "Left" on the question of the Syrian uprising and its ...

Words Are Not Enough

[Boys play on a makeshift bridge over a sewage-filled stream in the Bedouin village of Umm Batin. Image from Adalah.]

During the past two weeks, the United States and the European Union released their annual human rights and progress reports, respectively, on Israel. Each one substantially criticized the state of minority rights in the country. The US State Department called the "institutional and societal discrimination" against Arab citizens of Israel one of the country's top three most significant human rights issues of 2011, and the EU stressed that "progress on the situation of the Arab minority was limited." While the acknowledgment of discrimination against Palestinian citizens of Israel is welcome, these words alone are not an adequate response to the ...

Syria's Creative Resistance

[Large demonstration in Homs, Syria against the Syrian regime. Image from WikiMedia Commons.]

Bashar al-Assad snores, his head twitching on a large white pillow. Suddenly, he wakes up. “The people want to overthrow me!” he screams, the pompom on his nightcap bouncing.  A military officer approaches, pats him on the head and whispers gently, as if comforting a toddler: “Don’t worry, my dear Mr. President, nobody wants to bring you down. Go back to sleep.”  “But I dreamed that the people don’t love me anymore!” “We all love you, Mr. President”, says the officer, “but you have to rest. Tomorrow is Friday and we have a lot of work to do!” Bashar lies back on his pillow and dozes off. “Sleep…sleep…let nothing disturb your dreams”, the ...

Salafi Trouble in Tunisia's Transition

One of the prominent developments in the aftermath of the fallen dictatorship in Tunisia was the resurgence in the public sphere of groups with Salafi backgrounds. Their sudden incursion into the political arena and the polemics that they generated in different political matters resulted in their increased use of violence against other political and social actors. These actions have left large segments of Tunisian society skeptical about the outcome of the country’s political transition. Nothing in ...

The Revolution's Barometer

The Mohammed Mahmud wall remains alive and kicking through its graffiti, which is getting altered by the hour. The walls continue to be whitened thanks to the efforts of Egyptian authorities. Yet drawings keep on appearing layers after layers to cover the older ones and the white paint. Not only have the walls of Mohammed Mahmud Street become “a memorial space,” as I have noted in a previous contribution, but also a barometer of the Egyptian revolution. The murals seem to be vividly narrating the most ...

On Legal Advocacy and Legitimation of Control

When he was imprisoned, Nelson Mandela utilized his background as a lawyer to begin filing suits on behalf of other prisoners to improve their situation. Some prisoners objected: they viewed Mandela’s action as cooperating with the regime and legitimizing its control over the prisoners. Mandela rejected these claims, contending that his suits were an integral part of the prisoners’ political struggle. The question of whether legal advocacy during the era of apartheid granted legitimacy to the regime was ...

When Protector Turned Killer

Back in January, Faiz Fathi Jfara of Bani Walid asked a simple question, “I just need an answer from NATO: why did you destroy my home and kill my family?” NATO refuses to answer him. NATO went to war in Libya to protect civilians through a UN mandate (Resolution 1973). The UN Human Rights Council and the International Criminal Court gave legitimacy to NATO's operations, and it began its ten thousand sorties in March 2011. The war quickly exceeded the UN mandate, moving for regime change using immense ...
