Clashing with the Ultras: A Firsthand Account

[Ultras flags appearing at the site of clashes between protesters and security forces near the Ministry of Interior. Photo by Mostafa Sheshtawy]

A march, scheduled earlier today, demanded that members of the Supreme Council for the Armed Forces (SCAF) be brought to justice for past crimes and abuse against revolutionary activists and Ultras protesters. The march started at El Fath mosque and was supposed to reach the area surrounding the Ministry of Defense. The call for the march, which was endorsed by prominent activists, was initiated by an Ultras Ahlawy member and activist in an attempt to unify the efforts of revolutionary activists and Ultras. The march featured a few thousand people, including diehard football fans and a cross section of society, along with the usual faces who turn out at such protests. ...

Film-Portrait of Dr Mohamed Al-Roken, Human Rights Defender, UAE

[Alkarama Foundation logo. Image from alkarama.org]

The following video was produced by the Alkarama Foundation to highlight the work of Mohamed al-Roken, co-laureate of 2012 Alkarama Award for human rights defenders. Al-Roken has defended many political activists and fellow human rights defenders who were stripped of their citizenship, detained arbitrarily, subjected to travel bans, or tortured solely for having expressed their opinions. On 17 July 2012, the Emirati security services arrested Dr. al-Roken in Dubai during the largest crackdown against human rights activists and political dissent in the country’s history. Since then, he has been detained in solitary confinement in an unknown location along with sixty-five ...

Two Years and Counting: The Bahrain Uprising, in Pictures

[Two Bahraini protesters escaping tear gas. Image from Saeed Saif)

Over the last two years, the fickle eye of the international media has strayed from the ongoing demonstrations in Bahrain. In February 2011, with the advent of the Arab uprisings, Bahrainis took to the streets to demand constitutional reform, equal rights, and, eventually, the overthrow of the ruling Bahraini monarchy. These protests were not new: Bahrain has a long history of organized activism, and Bahrainis have protested for political reform and more labor rights since the 1930s. While the demonstrators—both Sunni and Shi’a—are advocating for a more equitable and democratic political system, the ruling monarchy has painted the conflict in sectarian terms, blaming ...

Two Years of Deaths and Detentions

The Bahrain Center for Human Rights publishes a second anniversary report: "Two Years of Deaths and Detentions: Documenting Human Rights Abuses During the Pro-Democracy Movement in Bahrain (February 2013)"  An Opening Letter From Maryam Al-Khawaja: In the two years that the pro-democracy movement has been ongoing, eighty-seven people have died as a direct result of the excessive use of force applied by the King’s brutal security forces, including thirteen children under the age of eighteen. As this report details the deaths and detentions that dominate the government’s appalling repression of democracy, the Bahrain Center for Human Rights asks how long ...

Mohamed Morsi Mubarak: The Myth of Egypt's Democratic Transition

[Graffiti circulating on social networking sites stating:

Two years ago today, Egyptians celebrated their toppling of President Hosni Mubarak and looked ahead to a future of change. Yet the second anniversary of Mubarak’s departure has been marked by further demonstrations, bloodshed, and new scenes of extreme state violence. Amid the now-routine use of tear gas and live fire on protests nationwide, there was the incredible footage of the repeated beating and violation of a citizen stripped naked by a gang of policemen in riot gear, and the death by brutal police torture of Popular Current activist Mohamed El-Gendy. In this latest wave of national mobilization, Egyptians have been challenging a new president, whom they have ...

The Dignity of Hamada Saber

[Hamada Saber beaten up by police forces on 1 February 2013. Photo from ElFagr.org]

Depictions of bruised and battered bodies have had an enormous influence upon the waves of protest Egypt has witnessed since the initial stirrings of the January 25 Revolution – from the graphic post-mortem photograph of Khaled Said to images of what is widely known as the “blue bra incident.” However, I suspect few Egyptians would question the particular force of the brutality depicted in a video shot in front of the Ittihadiyya Palace on the evening of 1 February, even as compared to the infamous scenes just mentioned. In an incident that was broadcast live to Egyptians on Al-Hayat television, and then rebroadcast to an international audience on CNN, a man is beaten, ...

The Thin Line between Revolution And Sedition

[Mohamed Morsi at a press conference on 18 June 2012. Photo by Jonathan Rashad (from Wikimedia Commons)]

I read with great sadness – but unfortunately not much surprise – Professor Adel Iskander’s deeply misguided article, “A Nation Derailed,” published on 28 January 2013 on Jadaliyya. Iskander’s attempt to play politics with the tragic deaths of nineteen deceased train accident victims is, well, not the classiest of moves. In the article, Iskander makes a very simplistic, and all too played out three-pronged argument: First, the Mohamed Morsi administration is failing miserably; second, the Egyptian government’s failure is a fundamental cause of the train accident, other accidents occurring recently in Egypt, and the horrendous conditions that characterize the country’s ...

Statement on 43 Bahraini Protesters Arrested Days After Calls for Dialogue

[The following statement was issued by the Bahrain Center for Human Rights on 27 January 2013.] The Bahrain Center for Human Rights expresses grave concern over the continued use of excessive force to restrict and attack freedom of expression and assembly in Bahrain despite announced plans for political dialogue by the regime. On 25 Jan 2012 hundreds of Bahrainis took the streets in the capital Manama and peacefully protested to demand rights, including the right to self-determination, despite restrictions. The Ministry of Interior set up security checkpoints and road blocks on streets leading to the capital to restrict access.

Bahrain As I Remember It

On that day, 14 February 2011, there was a sense that things would change. The energy of the crowd was electric and contagious. The frustration that had built up for years unfolded in the form of peaceful protests in Pearl Square—the revolutionary space that had housed hundreds of thousands of Bahrainis for months, and had been subsequently destroyed by authorities. On that day, 14 February 2011, history repeated itself in Bahrain, as the sources of power repressed the majority through the forceful ...

Dear Bahrain... With Love

Valentine’s Day and the color red symbolize love. The world over, shops and streets are decked out with red decorations, red boxes, red wrapping paper, red cards, and red roses. In Bahrain, the color red also symbolizes love, just a different kind of love. Streets there are covered in red too, the red of the blood that has been shed over the past two years. The lost lives in the fight for freedom, justice, and democracy. Red roses on the graves of loved ones who were killed by regime forces. Valentine’s ...

The Maspero Massacre: Adding Injustice to Insult and Injury

Amidst the marches, street battles, and political deadlock covered night after night by the Egyptian media, one recent story almost escaped notice. On 4 February Michael Farag and Michael Shaker were each sentenced to three years in prison for having stolen weapons from the armed forces. With noteworthy decisions handed down by Egyptian judges on an almost daily basis, these sentences might seem, at first glance, rather mundane. What makes the media inattention harder to comprehend, however, is the ...

Police Brutality Persists Two Years after Egypt Revolution: Rights Activists

Following the recent death of activist Mohamed El-Gendy, who allegedly died after being subject to torture by police, several Egyptian rights activists issued a report on Sunday detailing what they see as the persistence of oppressive police tactics employed by the state. According to the report, 225 people have been detained from the vicinity of Cairo's Tahrir Square since the second anniversary of Egypt's January 25 Revolution, which coincided with mass rallies against the government and President ...

Two Years of Meta-Narratives: How Not to Cover Syria

Bassam Haddad mentioned in his article entitled “The Triumph and Irrelevance of Meta-Narratives Over Syria: “Rohna Dahiyyah” that people writing about Syria are often detached from the pain and realities of the people on the ground. We believe this argument is rather fallacious and unfair. Some of those producing media on Syria have gone the extra mile to get as close to the heart of the issue as they could, encapsulating the complexity of the struggle and giving a voice to the Syrian people who live in ...
