But more than anything, autism activism in Morocco is a project in world-making, an attempt to create novel spaces and institutions for – as well as to cultivate new dispositions toward – people who might otherwise be considered crazy (ḥemmaq), retarded (met’akhkhar), or possessed (mejnun). Iran was host to the 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) on 26-31 August 2012. In order to hold this gathering, the Iranian government spent a reported sum of six hundred million dollars. Tehran, a mega city of twelve million, was practically shut down for five days; a massive force of 110,000 people took over the security of the conference; 360 checkpoints were established in the city; and residents were encouraged to leave the city. In recent weeks, as the number of casualties in the Syrian civil war has been soaring exponentially, so have comparisons of the situation in the country with the wars that ravaged and, ultimately, resulted in the break up of the Yugoslav federation into several smaller and purportedly ethnically more homogeneous states in the 1990s – a process commonly referred to as Balkanisation.
