Saudi Women Respond to Exclusion from Voting: Baladi Campaign [My Country Campaign]
[The Baladi Campaign was launched by a group of women activists from across Saudi Arabia after the Saudi government announced in March that it would deny women their right to political participation in the upcoming September 2011 elections. The government justified its ban on female voters on the same premise used to prevent them from voting in the 2005 elections: lack of institutional preparedness. Several Saudi women have recently challenged this ban by showing up at voter registration offices in different Saudi cities demanding voter identification cards. To my knowledge, only two women were able to register their names, both in Khobar in the Eastern ...

The following is a nine-minute documentary about Ayat al-Qurmuzi, a poet who was detained during the Bahraini uprising. The short film was produced as part of the Solidarity Campaign with Female Prisoners of Conscience in Bahrain. Despite official statements that the state of emergency will be lifted as of June 1, 2011, Bahrain citizens continue to be brutalized through a combination of detentions, arrests, torture, and political trials.
Keep Reading »Bahrain, Kingdom of Silence
An eerie silence and a paralyzing sense of fear currently grip Bahrain. Since mid-March, when tens of thousands of protesters last took to the streets demanding political reform, Bahraini security and military forces have engaged in an ongoing, systematic, and brutal campaign to crush the country’s pro-democracy forces. The crackdown has been sweeping and shocking. Dozens of activists have been killed. Hundreds more have been imprisoned and tortured. Bahrain’s leading independent newspaper, al-Wasat, is expected to close down on May 10. Provocative government actions belie claims that all the monarchy seeks is to re-establish law and order. It is apparent, instead, that ...

Translation by Ziad Abu-Rish.] News source: President Bashar al-Asad will soon announce amending Article 8 of the constitution . . . but no formation of religious parties allowed in Syria. The Lebanese newspaper, al-Banaa, reported that sources close to decision-making circles in Syria claim that President Bashar al-Asad will soon announce amending Article 8 of the constitution, which [currently] limits rule of the state to the Socialist Arab Ba'th Party, to include all parties affiliated with the National Progressive Front. The Front will also be ...

[Below is latest from the International Crisis Group (ICG) on Syria] Syria: Quickly Going Beyond the Point of No Return The situation in Syria is quickly going beyond the point of no return. By denouncing all forms of protest as sedition, and dealing with them through escalating violence, the regime is closing the door on any possible honourable exit to a deepening national crisis. With little the international community can do, the optimal outcome is one whose chances are dwindling by the day: an immediate end to the violence and a genuine national dialogue to pave the way for a transition to a representative, democratic political order. Over the past several weeks, ...

[Below is the latest from the International Crisis Group (ICG) on the Gaza Strip. For the full ICG report, click here.] Radical Islam in Gaza Executive Summary The recent Israel-Hamas escalation returns a spotlight to Gaza and the Islamist movement’s relationship with more militant organisations. Gaza arouses multiple concerns: does Hamas seeks to impose religious law; has its purported Islamisation stimulated growth of Salafi-Jihadi groups; and will al-Qaeda offshoots find a foothold there? Hamas faces competition from more radical Islamist groups, though their numbers are few, organisation poor, achievements against Israel so far minor and chances of threatening ...

[The below excerpt is from a New Left Review interview with Hazim Kandil on the origins, course, and future trajectory of the Egyptian Revolution. For the full interview, click here] Mubarak has gone, but the apparatuses on which his dictatorship rested have not vanished. The armed forces currently hold ultimate power, in the shape of the Supreme Military Council. How should the Egyptian military be characterized, and what role is it now likely to play? When a regime has come to power through military force, either by coup or conquest, it typically issues into a tripartite structure, with a division of labour between its three component parts, each crystallizing into ...

[The following announcement was originally released in Arabic, and can be found here. Before Damascus’ sky darkens, why don’t you look at the smooth red circles around their foreheads and stomachs, where our eyes will come to rest? Here in Damascus, the killers’ eyes will soon be ...
