Mohamed Shafeeq Karinkurayil spent his childhood between Kerala and in Abu Dhabi. His research interest in the cultural expressions of Kerala’s Gulf migration phenomenon stemmed from his initial effort to recollect the time he spent in Abu Dhabi through migrant photographs of the time, which led him subsequently to greater questions of the memory, aspirations, and everyday life in and regarding the Gulf. Other than the monograph The Gulf Migrant Archives of Kerala: Reading Borders and Belonging, he has several academic and mainstream writings on the Gulf-Kerala phenomenon.
