Charles Häberl
Charles Häberl is Professor of African, Middle Eastern, and South Asian Languages and Literatures (AMESALL) and Religion at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in New Brunswick, NJ, USA. He works at the intersection of language and religion in the Middle East, ancient and modern. To this end, he has engaged in collaborative fieldwork with members of contemporary ethnic and religious minorities in the region and in diaspora, documenting aspects of their life and language. He has additionally engaged in translation work and scholarship on sacred religious texts from the same communities. The primary focus of his research is the Sabian Mandaean community of the territories around the head of the Gulf, in southern Iraq and southwestern Iran.
