I was inspired to write this book by my experiences serving for two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in a small rural Muslim community in southern Jordan at the height of the so-called “War on Terror.”

Dr. Geoffrey Fitzgibbon Hughes is Lecturer in Anthropology at the University of Exeter, where he has been teaching since 2018. He studied anthropology and science and technology studies at the University of Michigan before going on to a postdoctoral fellowship at the London School of Economics and Political Science. In addition to several articles on marriage, social media, and envy, he has recently published his first monograph, Kinship, Islam and the Politics of Marriage in Jordan: Affection and Mercy, with Indiana University Press (2021).
