Prisoner of the Infidels is the first-person account of a young Ottoman soldier who, taken prisoner a few years after the failed siege of Vienna in 1683, spent more than a decade as an enslaved captive in Christian Europe.

Giancarlo Casale is Professor of Early Modern Mediterranean History at the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, as well as a permanent member of the history faculty at the University of Minnesota. His previous works include The Ottoman Age of Exploration (Oxford, 2010). Since 2011, he has also served as executive editor of the Journal of Early Modern History.
