I have been writing this book without knowing I was writing it. It was a journey that spanned the better part of a decade. I started to write in the summer of 2013, what I call in the book “the summer of massacres.”

Maged Mandour is an Egyptian political analyst who writes regularly for outlets such as Middle East Eye, openDemocracy, the Arab Digest, and Sada, the journal of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He has made a number of media appearances as a commentator on Egyptian affairs and is a graduate of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
