General Union of Palestinian Students
The General Union of Palestine Students is a student run political organization that has been apart of the San Francisco State University Community for over four decades. Established in the 1970s, the Palestinian student movement was one of the first national Palestinian institutions to be formed in San Francisco. The General Union of Palestine Students was officially launched in 1959 in Cairo, Egypt. Over a hundred branches of the organization were then established worldwide, with a total of over 100,000 students. The General Union of Palestine Students has played a crucial role in the Arab World and beyond in increasing awareness of the Palestinian struggle and fighting for justice. GUPS at SFSU is currently the last standing active chapter in the United States.
