Beth Baron

 

Beth Baron currrently serves as president of the Middle East Studies Association. She is a professor of history at City College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York, and is president-elect of the Middle East Studies Association. Her latest book is The Orphan Scandal: Christian Missionaries and the Rise of the Muslim Brotherhood (Stanford, 2014). She authored Egypt as a Woman: Nationalism, Gender, and Politics (California, 2005) and The Women’s Awakening in Egypt: Culture, Society, and the Press (Yale, 1994), and co-edited Women in Middle Eastern History: Shifting Boundaries in Sex and Gender (Yale, 1991) with Nikki Keddie and Iran and Beyond: Essays in Middle Eastern History in Honor of Nikki R. Keddie (Mazda, 2000) with Rudi Matthee. She is co-founder and director of the Middle East and Middle Eastern American Center (MEMEAC) at the CUNY Graduate Center. Baron has received grants from the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and the Carnegie Corporation. She is a former editor of the International Journal of Middle East Studies.
