Zainab Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja, mother of a three-year-old daughter, has been involved in human rights work since 2001. Her involvement increased when Bahrain’s pro-democracy movement started on 14 February 2011. Since then, she has been very active on the ground and has participated in many protests and has documented human rights violations that have been occurring in Bahrain. She has exposed these violations, which include the arrest, beating and killing of protesters, to the world via Twitter and other social networking sites. Due to her relentless activism on the front lines, she was targeted several times and then arrested and imprisoned. She has had over a dozen court cases against her, all related to freedom of expression and her participation in protests. Zainab was also shot at close range with tear gas, which caused bone fracture and muscle tears that needed several operations. Despite that, she continued protesting and was arrested again. Zainab was nominated for the top 150 fearless women in the world and one of Foreign Policy Magazine`s top 100 global thinkers. She has also received the Freedom Award from Freedom House. She is currently nominated along with two family members for the Nobel Peace Prize.
