Alia Ayman

 

Alia Ayman is a filmmaker, writer and curator. After directing two short films, she co-founded Zawya, an art house cinema launched by Misr International Films (Youssef Chahine) in March 2014. Working primarily on the cinema’s film program, the events she has put together at Zawya as the cinema’s head curator have so far included Shorts Revisited #1, Hybrid Reels: Revisiting the Documentary, and numerous retrospectives, screenings and workshops. She has also curated for the Brussels based edition of Meeting Points, a bi-annual, multi-city contemporary arts event and for the Detroit Institute of the Art’s Egyptian silent film program. Alia is currently pursuing her PhD in Visual and Media Anthropology at New York University. Her research focuses on alternative film distribution and exhibition, cinematic bureaucracies and infrastructures and the history of Arab documentary traditions
