Rachel Beckles Willson

 

Rachel Beckles Willson is Professor of Music at Royal Holloway, University of London. She trained originally as a pianist at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest, then read for a PhD in theory and analysis at Kings College, London. She is the author of Gyorgy Kurtag`s The Sayings of Peter Bornemisza Op.7 (Ashgate, 2004); Ligeti, Kurtág, and Hungarian Music during the Cold War (Cambridge, 2007); and Orientalism and Musical Mission: Palestine and the West (Cambridge, 2013). She is currently working on a project funded by the Leverhulme Trust. Focusing on the performance of Ottoman repertories today, this engages with recent debates about materiality and sound, and involves practice-led research involving the `ūd.
