Shima Houshyar and Behzad Sarmadi

 

Behzad Sarmadi is a PhD Candidate in Socio-Cultural Anthropology at the University of Toronto. Having grown up in Dubai, his dissertation research has brought him back to this city where he is focusing on the socio-political dimensions of its urban transformation, with a particular emphasis on its Iranian population. Behzad was a Visiting Scholar at what was then called the Dubai School of Government (2010-2011).  His scholarly publication to date is ‘Bachelor in the City’: Urban Transformation and Matter Out of Place in Dubai, at the Journal of Arabian Studies. Behzad is also an editor at Ajam Media Collective.

 

Shima Houshyar is an M.A. student at the Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies at New York University. Her research interests focus on issues of gender, sexuality, minorities, nationalism, and the state. Shima splits her time between her two homes of the US and Iran, and is currently an editor at Ajam Media Collective.
