Kenneth M. Cuno is associate professor of history at the University of Illinois. He is the author of Modernizing Marriage: Family, Ideology, and Law in Nineteenth- and Early Twentieth-Century Egypt (Syracuse, 2015) and The Pasha’s Peasants: Land, Society, and Economy in Lower Egypt, 1740–1858 (Cambridge, 1993), and co-editor of Family, Gender, and Law in a Globalizing Middle East and South Asia (Syracuse, 2009) and Race and Slavery in the Middle East (American University in Cairo, 2010).
