Wael Hallaq

 

Wael B. Hallaq is the Avalon Foundation Professor in the Humanities at Columbia University, where he teaches Islamic intellectual history, ethics, Sufism, and law. His books include Ibn Taymiyya Against the Greek Logicians (1993); Authority, Continuity and Change in Islamic Law (2001); and Origins and Evolution of Islamic Law (2005). His The Impossible State (2013) has won Columbia University Press’s Distinguished Book Award for 2013-2015, and his Reforming Modernity (2019) received a Nautilus Award. Hallaq’s work has been widely debated and translated into many languages.
