Pamela Karimi

Pamela Karimi received her PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2009. Since then, she has been teaching in the College of Visual & Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. Karimi's primary field of specialization is art, architecture, and visual culture in the modern Middle East. Her research interests also extend to design and sustainability in North America. An accomplished author and curator, Karimi has written two books and curated several major exhibitions, including Urban Renewal and Creative Economy in Massachusetts Gateway CitiesStateless: Artists Respond to the Refugee CrisisBlack Spaces Matter, and Contemporary Iranian Art & the Historical Imagination. Karimi’s work has been featured in numerous publications and media outlets, including NPRHyperallergic, the BBC, and Al-Jazeera. Karimi has received several fellowships, including from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Iran Heritage Foundation, American Council of Learned Societies, and the Social Science Research Council. More recently, she was the co-recipient of a major grant from the Getty Foundation's Connecting Art Histories Initiative. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to teaching, Karimi was awarded the Manning Prize for Excellence in Teaching in 2018.
