Don Karl and Basma Handy

 

Don Karl aka Stone is a cultural activist, graffiti writer, author, and publisher. He started painting graffiti in 1983 and published his first book on train writing in 1986. Many books and articles have followed. He co-wrote the book Arabic Graffiti (From Here to Fame, 2011), and has curated numerous international urban art projects such as Cubabrasil and White Wall Beirut. Since 2011 he has worked closely with Egyptian street artists on events and exhibitions. He currently runs the publishing house From Here To Fame in Berlin.

Basma Hamdy is an Egyptian artist, designer, and educator who researches Arabic graffiti, Arabic typography, and visual culture. She graduated from the American University in Cairo in 1998 and completed an MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in 2003. She has been teaching art and design in the Middle East for ten years and is the co-editor of Walls of Freedom: Street Art of the Egyptian Revolution (From Here to Fame, 2014), a book that documents the street art movement in Egypt during the Egyptian uprisings.
