All the anomalies of authoritarianism in contemporary Turkey seem telescoped, or short circuited in Istanbul’s “Palaces of Justice” (Adalet Sarayı). One of these “palaces” is on the Anatolian side in Kartal, and two in Europe, in Çağlayan and Bakırköy.
Ayşe Öncü
Ayşe Öncü is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at Sabancı University in Istanbul. She is a member of the Academy of Sciences. Her academic career includes two decades at Boğaziçi University as well as visiting professorships at the University of California (Los Angeles) and University of Ann Arbor (Michigan). Her research interests center on cultural politics, with special emphasis on city cultures and media/public spheres. In addition to numerous book chapters, she has published articles in journals such as Contemporary Sociology, Review, the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, European Journal of Cultural Studies, and Public Culture. She has been part of collaborative research networks in the MENA Region, including GURI (Global Urban Research Initiative), MEAwards (Middle East Awards) and MERC (Middle East Research Council).
