Stephen Sheehi is an internationally acclaimed author, scholar and activist. Currently, he is Associate Professor of Arabic and Arab Culture at the University of South Carolina. His received his PhD in Near Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan. In addition to Islamophobia: The Ideological Campaign Against Muslims, he is the author of Foundations of Modern Arab Identity(University Press of Florida, 2004) as well as the forthcoming Arab Image: A Social History of Indigenous Photography (Princeton University Press). He has published in journals such asInternational Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, The British Journal of Middle East Studies, Discourse, Critique, The Journal of Arabic Literature, and The Journal of Comparative South Asian, African, and Middle Eastern Studies. He is interested in visual, literary, intellectual and material culture of the 19th and early 20th century Arab world. In addition to his scholarship, Dr. Sheehi has published opinion articles on contemporary issues of the Middle East in an array of newspapers and journals nationally and internationally including Common Dreams, BeliefNet, and al-Adab. He has also been a life long activist for social and economic justice most notably the cause for Palestinian right of self-determination, anti-racism and the alternative globalization movement.
