Benjamin Schuetze

Benjamin Schuetze is a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Freiburg and a research associate at the Arnold-Bergstraesser-Institute. Following his studies in Leipzig, Beirut, and London, he conducted extensive field research in Jordan, Belgium, and the United States, and completed his PhD at SOAS, London, in 2016. In his research, he explores the politics of intervention, US-Jordanian military collaboration, transregional authoritarian entanglements, and the political economy of renewable energy projects in the MENA region. His publications have appeared in Security DialogueCooperation and Conflict and Al-Jazeera. His recently published book, Promoting Democracy, Reinforcing Authoritarianism: US and European Policy in Jordan (Cambridge University Press, 2019) provides a vivid illustration of what external “democracy promoters” in Jordan actually do when they promote democracy.
