Alma Heckman and the Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative (MESPI)

Alma Rachel Heckman is Neufeld-Levin Chair of Holocaust Studies and Assistant Professor of History and Jewish Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. She specializes in modern Jewish history of North Africa and the Middle East with an interest in citizenship, the politics of belonging, transnationalism and empire. She is completing a book manuscript tentatively entitled, “The Sultan's Communists: Moroccan Jewish Nationalists and the Politics of Belonging" as well as an edited volume examining Jews in radical politics in a comparative framework. She has held fellowships with Fulbright, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and has published her work in a number of journals and edited volumes, including, most recently “Jewish Radicals of Morocco: Case Study for a New Historiography,” in Jewish Social Studies Vol. 23, No. 30, Spring/Summer 2018: 67-100.

MESPI is a curated interactive platform for ME studies resources specifically tailored for the needs of teachers, researchers, and students. It will be the one-stop shop for course design on the macro level, lesson planning on the micro level, and for scholarship vis-a-vis specific topics, countries, and disciplines.
