When I received my basic training as a historian in the early 2000s, everyone seemed to be writing about what was in people’s heads. Group identities, like nationality and gender, were particularly important to Middle East historians.
Fredrik Meiton
Fredrik Meiton is a historian of science and technology in the modern Middle East. His research focuses on the intersection of politics, science, and technology, especially in the context of colonial development. He is the author of Electrical Palestine: Capital and Technology from Empire to Nation (University of California Press, 2019), which charts the construction of mandatory Palestine’s electric grid as it co-evolved with the increasingly divided politics and society of the area, in an effort to rethink both the origins of the Arab-Israeli conflict and the interplay of power, science, and technology more broadly.
