Brotherhood sets sights on June`s presidential elections, without breaking promise to not field a candidate.
The Muslim Brotherhood is currently looking for a candidate to back in the upcoming presidential elections set for June 2012.
According to Brotherhood spokesperson, Mahmoud Ghozlan, the group will not support any of the figures who have already announced their intention to run for president. He says they will try to persuade a figure who they find satisfactory to run for Egypt’s top post.
Following Mubarak’s ouster last February, the group had announced that they will not field a presidential candidate this time around. They even fired one of the group’s most popular leaders, Abdel Moneim Aboul-Fotouh, after he announced in April his intention to run in Egypt’s first post-Mubarak presidential elections.
In addition to Aboul-Fotouh, several figures have confirmed their intention to run for president, including former director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohamed ElBaradei, head of Al-Karama Party Hamdeen Sabahi, head of Ghad Al-Thawra Party Ayman Nour and head of the Salafist Hazem Salah Abou Ismail.
