SJME Denounces Discrimination in Spanish Migrant Detention System
Spain’s Servicio Jesuita a Migrantes denounced the use of detention centers in Spain and called for their abolition. Their report found that in 2019 over seven thousand individuals have been detained, with over two-thirds of these individuals coming from Algeria or Morocco. Furthermore, the SJME found an overall increase in forced returns from 2017. Although some organizations found a marked improvement in the conditions and treatment of the detained individuals, the SJME continues to push for their complete abolition.
The European Committee on Social Rights has urged Greece to take “immediate action” to prevent any harm to the physical and mental health of migrant children by providing them with adequate food, shelter, healthcare, and education. Furthermore, the government has been asked to remove any unaccompanied minors from detention centers and appoint them appropriate guardians. This comes after the government was unable to dispel concerns after an accusation of violations of the rights of migrant children.
Situation Worsens for Migrants on Western Mediterranean Route
As Spain and the European Union have turned to Morocco as a watchdog for overseas migration, there have been increasing reports of police violence and detainment of “black individuals” to prevent them from reaching Spain. Although the estimated percentage of boats successfully reaching Spain has dropped from fifty to twenty percent, the number of individuals arriving in Spain has increased from the same period in 2018.
European Union continues its support to Sahrawi refugees in Algeria
The European Commission has pledged its continued to support refugees in five Sahrawi refugee camps with a donation of 4.6 million dollars to the World Food Programme. This donation is intended to cover the basic food needs of the most insecure individuals of the Sahrawi refugee camps, estimated to be about seventy-seven percent. The Sahrawi refugees have been living in camps in the Sahara Desert in southwestern Algeria for the past forty years and are largely dependent on aid from the international community.
UNHCR secures release of 96 detainees from Libya's Zintan detention center
A group of Somali, Ethiopian, and Eritrean migrants were successfully removed from Zintan detention center in Tripoli and relocated to a Gathering and Departure Facility. The UNHCR has been providing the group with food, shelter, and medical assistance while they wait to be evacuated from the country. Over six hundred individuals continued to be housed at the center, which suffers from overcrowding and poor living conditions as hostilities in the area continue to worsen. Unfortunately, individuals are brought to these centers after being caught along the Libyan coast faster than they are being evacuated.

Humanitarian organizations and churches criticized these rejections as harsh, while authorities are attempting to justify their actions by describing such cases as “exceptional” and a matter of last resort.
Italy: UN experts condemn bill to fine migrant rescuers
A group of experts from the United Nations has condemned a proposed bill from Italy’s minister of the interior, Matteo Salvini, that would fine individuals and organizations who attempt to assist migrants at sea. These experts expressed their opinion that such a bill would violate basic human rights and the principle of non-refoulement in the name of nationalistic policies, and would only worsen the situation in the Mediterranean.

France: Systematic Immigration Detention further Undermines Rights
France’s continued use of detention centers has led to concern from several civil society organizations, which reported that France has detained over forty thousand individuals in 2018, mostly from northern Africa and eastern Europe. Furthermore, the number of children detained and “tied” to unrelated adults has increased over the past year, as well as the average length of the detention period.
Lebanon Continue Pressure on Refugees to Return to a Syria Still Unsafe
Despite continuing instability and a lack of security in Syria, the Lebanese authorities have declared a deadline of 9 June for Syrian refugees residing along the border to leave or face the demolition of their semi-permanent shelters. As the Lebanese authorities do not permit formal refugee camps, this action would result in the homelessness of over 25,000 Syrian refugees, the vast majority of whom lack legal residency in Lebanon. Without a legal right to stay or any other camp setting, it is unclear where these individuals, the vast majority of whom are children, would go.
France: Police harassing, intimidating, and even using violence against people helping refugees
A new report from Amnesty International highlights the ways in which French authorities have used intimidation tactics and even violence as a means of trying to curtail assistance for refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants in northern France. As the French authorities continue to destroy informal shelters, volunteers have attempted to meet the needs of these individuals, As a result, however, incidences of insults, verbal threats, and full-body searches of these volunteers has risen, affecting not only the quality of their work but their mental health as well.

Interceptions and Reluctant Rescues on the Mediterranean
Cooperation between the Italian and Maltese coast guards has resulted in the interception and rescue operations of hundreds of migrants in the Mediterranean. In the case of Malta, these individuals were brought to shore for medical assistance and to begin the asylum process. The Italian government has also taken in ships off the coasts of Calabria and Libya, although in one instance they were criticized for delaying the rescue process and thereby risking the lives of ninety individuals for no reason. As weather conditions improve in the region, it is expected that the number of people trying to cross the Mediterranean will increase.
Migrants in Bosnia and Herzegovina dying while seeking safety
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has urged action to help migrants in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where thousands of people lack access to formal camps and shelters. As a result, these individuals are forced to live in dangerous conditions, a situation which puts them physically at risk as demonstrated by a handful of recent deaths. Furthermore, psychological distress from the situation has caused at least one reported incident of suicide. In addition to the thousands of migrants living outside of formal shelters, those within shelters suffer from a lack of resources and increased concerns of the spread of communicable diseases.
Two Migrants Found Dead In Tanker Truck In Serbia

Libya's migrants and refugees with tuberculosis 'left to die' in detention centers
The UN human rights office (OHCHR) has reported that refugees with tuberculosis, a curable and preventable illness, are essentially being left to die at a detention center south of Tripoli. This comes in the wake of poor living conditions as conflict heightens in the regions. Furthermore, OHCHR has expressed concerns that migrants rescued off the coast of Libya are being sold into forced labor or smugglers who offer a path to Europe.
Why Turkey is closing down Syrian refugee camps
Turkey has explained its policy of closing down Syrian refugee camps, begun in late 2018, as a result of high costs and a lack of integration on the part of the Syrian refugees. Experts, however, believe the decision is an attempt to force refugees to choose between unsustainable and uncertain aid in larger Turkish cities and returning to an unstable country. With the clear goal being the repatriation of Syrian refugees in a way that circumvents the policy non-refoulement, the closure of camps will clearly lead to “voluntary” repatriation due to insufficient support for those who remain in Turkey.
Assad urged Syrian refugees to come home. Many are being welcomed with arrest and interrogation.
According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, over two thousand individuals have been detained upon returning to Syria over the past two years. Return to Syria requires approval from the government, and most returnees make the decision to go back with the understanding that they will be allowed to live peacefully. Far from this, however, it has been widely reported that individuals are harassed, detained, and even tortured as a means of providing information on friends and family who may have collaborated with the armed resistance. Despite promising to “forgive” those who had fled and exempt them from military service, the Syrian government has continued to extort, arrest, and harass the majority of returnees.

Nutritional profile of Syrian refugee children before resettlement
A retrospective review of over fifteen thousand Syrian refugee children between the ages of six to fifty-nine months who sought resettlement by IOM was used to determine the rates of under- and overnutrition among the sampled population. These children, who were eventually resettled in Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, Egypt, and Iraq, were found to have few incidences of undernutrition and in fact, ten percent met the criteria for overnutrition (overweight or obese). The study also found undernutrition increased with age, and boys were more likely to meet the criteria for overnutrition.

Hurting in Yemen, Somali refugees head home in time for Eid
As a result of deteriorating conditions in Yemen as the conflict there reaches its fourth year, growing numbers of Somali refugees are opting to return home for the first time in decades. Thousands of migrants continue to remain in detention centers in Yemen, the vast majority of whom are Muslim and went through a thirty-day fast for Ramadan. These irregular migrants have been detained in sports stadiums in Yemen, and are provided with clean food and water by the IOM. These individuals suffer from a lack of access to hygienic facilities, as well as the outbreak of communicable diseases.
Lebanon's Deir al-Ahma: How an incident displaced 600 refugees
An accidental fire at a Syrian refugee camp in Lebanon led to an altercation between refugees and rescue firefighters, which Lebanese media reports came from refugees accusing the firefighters of arriving late intentionally. As a result of heightening tensions between refugees and the local community, individuals in the camp were ordered to obey a curfew in the name of their own safety. Despite efforts to avoid conflict, it is reported that hundreds of refugees have fled the camp for a town north of the area in order to escape harassment and threats from locals. Furthermore, it is reported that locals set fire to two tents at the camp after the incident in order to “get back” at the refugees.
Mediterranean will be 'sea of blood' without rescue boats, UN warns
As the conflict in Libya increases the number of migrants fleeing for Europe through the Mediterranean, a record-low number of rescue vessels is making more likely the risk of death at sea, according to the United Nations. Despite an overall increase in deaths from the previous year, the number of people who drown as a proportion of arrivals to Europe from Libya has increased. A recent study from the Institute for International Political Studies found that one in eight individuals crossing the Mediterranean had died en route since January. Much of this has been caused by increased restrictions on rescue vessels from Italian and Maltese governments, which have closed ports and seized ships.
