The EU is Complicit in Migrants' Horrific Fate in Libya
The president of Refugees International issued a statement regarding the recent bombing of the Tajoura detention center in Tripoli, in which over fifty people died. He brought to light Europe’s role in the situation, explaining how refugees are brought to these detention centers by the Libyan Coast Guard, which receives funding from Europe. The European Union’s continued attempts to send these migrants back to detention centers in Libya directly puts individuals at risk of death.

UNHCR appeals to Eritrea over refugee camp closure
Hundreds of refugees have left the Umkulu refugee camp in Eritrea, amidst reports that officials requested that they leave. Umkulu is Eritrea’s only refugee camp, and is reported to have recently hosted as many as 2100 Somali refugees. Now, though, over 1300 of these refugees have arrived in northern Ethiopia. UNHCR has asked the Eritrean authorities to not close the camp, which has been open for twenty years, and is working with them to relocate these 1300 refugees away from the border.
Denmark: Appeal Board Overturns Withdrawals of Protection Status for Syrians
Earlier this year the Danish Immigration Service revoked the temporary subsidiary protecting status of six Syrian nationals who had been in Denmark since 2015, citing stability in Damascus. The Asylum Appeal Board, however, has overturned this decision in all six cases, and even changed the status of protection on an individual basis, thereby allowing for more access to services in Danish society and a stronger guarantee of continued stay in Denmark.
Libya: Abhorrent attack on migrant detention centre must be investigated as a war crime
Amnesty International has called on the International Criminal Court to conduct an investigation into the airstrikes on the Tajoura detention center, which it claims all parties knew was a refugee holding center. According to Amnesty International, the refugees were carelessly and knowingly housed in a center next to a warehouse storing weapons, thereby making them vulnerable. Additionally, refugees claim to have been illegally detained there in order to work for the Libyan army, a clear violation of international law.

The hope is to bring together governments, civil society organizations, host communities, and refugees themselves to work for durable solutions.

Over 2,100 Ethiopian Migrants Return Home from Yemen with IOM Support
In less than a month between May and June, IOM’s Voluntary Humanitarian Return Program has seen eighteen flights from Aden to Addis Ababa, helping over two thousand migrants return home. These safe and chartered flights come after Yemeni officials began hosting thousands of migrants in dangerous detention centers, often without food, water, or sanitary facilities. Despite the two thousand migrants brought home, this represents only half of those still held in detention centers, the majority of whom are children.
131 refugees evacuated out of Libya to Niger, amidst ongoing conflict in Tripoli
Refugees from Eritrea, Somalia, and Sudan were evacuated from detention centers in Tripoli to Niger, with the support of the UNHCR. While still in Tripoli, evacuees are provided with food, shelter, medical assistance, and psychosocial support while awaiting their flight out of the country. The UNHCR has already assisted over one thousand vulnerable individuals being held in Tripoli, but increasing numbers of migrants forced to return back to Libya by the coast guard have raised fears of an even greater need.

Rescued refugees land in Sicily as another ship defies Salvini
The ship Alex defied Italy’s new law barring NGO ships from entering Italian ports with refugees when it rescued a group of Libyan migrants and brought them to the Sicilian port of Lampedusa. The Italian government fined the NGO in charge of the ship, Mediterranea, sixteen thousand euros. This comes after Carola Rackete, a German sea captain, defied the same law to bring in migrants stranded at sea. Although Rackete was initially held in prison, a judge declared she was only fulfilling her duty to protect life and she has been released.
Germany welcomed refugees. Now its reaping the economic benefits
A recent survey by the German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees found that almost thirty-ffive percent of refugees who had arrived prior to October 2018 had a job, and that fifty percent had skilled jobs. At a time where the population is aging and there are fears of economic stagnation, the presence of a large labor force has been a blessing for the German economy. At the same time, however, the government has been passing stricter laws regarding who can remain in the country, something many asylum seekers hope to circumvent by being sponsored by a company for work and language education.
Lebanon: Syrian Refugee Shelters Demolished
On 1 July 2019, the Lebanese authorities demolished twenty Syrian refugee camps, explaining that they did not comply with longstanding housing codes. This comes as armed Lebanese forces have also forced refugees living in semi-permanent structures to dismantle their homes and rebuild them with less permanent materials. Human Rights Watch criticized these actions, and identified them as “illegitimate pressure on Syrian refugees to leave Lebanon.”
Libya Tragedy: Why Lock up Migrants in the First Place?
After the airstrike on a detention center in Tripoli left over fifty refugees dead, there have been calls to examine the need for detention centers in the first place. Organizations have requested that all migrants in such centers, of which there are estimated to be almost four thousand, be airlifted out in order to avoid being caught in the crossfire of conflict. Rather than condemning the violence, there is a need to take meaningful action to save the lives of the most vulnerable.
The Greek Islands' Forgotten Emergency
As Greece nears an election, the issue of migrants and how to assist the over sixteen thousand migrants currently stranded on Greece’s islands remains unaddressed. Despite being an issue of international attention in 2015, services to these individuals have slowed down and they remain virtually forgotten. As a result of a law which mandates that they remain on the islands and cannot access the mainland, thousands of asylum seekers are overcrowded in camps without access to education or proper medical services.
Croatia: President Admits Unlawful Migrant Pushbacks

Furthermore, the EU agency in charge of protecting human rights at the border, Frontex, had previously reported no issues when they visited the Croatian border, thus calling into question their ability to carry out their job.
EU should charter migrant flights, says Italian FM
Italy’s Foreign Minister has outlined some of his plans for a united European approach to the migrant crisis, coming in the wake of tensions between Italy and the European Union over what it sees as an unfair burden in rescuing and taking in migrants. The FM called for migrants to apply for asylum outside of the European Union, and to then be flown directly to the country in which they are accepted, thereby circumventing human traffickers and a dangerous sea journey. He also called for greater investment in countries of origin to avoid the migration in the first place.
Don't take African generosity towards refugees for granted, says UN refugee chief
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees recently pointed not just to the high numbers of people in Africa being forced to leave their homes, but also to the positive humanitarian response across the continent toward refugees. He criticized governments and societies with access to more resources for their relatively subdued response in comparison to African communities, and called on the Security Council to take more action to protect the displaced.

Although only in its early stages, Mercy Corps reports overwhelmingly positive feedback from the individuals involved.

On a trek to safety, Somalis risk all in Libya
The UNHCR is using the stories of sub-Saharan migrants attempting to flee to northern Africa for a chance at safety as a means of securing funding for its new program, Routes towards the Mediterranean strategy. European consumers back businesses supporting refugees
According to a new study conducted in France, Italy, and Germany, European consumers would be more likely to buy products from a company helping refugees. Women and younger individuals were more likely to favor businesses supporting refugees. At the same time, however, most are against companies that support more refugees being allowed in, with only twenty-eight percent saying they’d be in favor.
Being host to hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees, Jordan’s economy has suffered a heavy burden and this has led to few formal economic opportunities for these refugees. Furthermore, while UNHCR offers cash assistance to new refugees, families are removed from the system after several years in order to accommodate newcomers. In order to help these families experiencing economic insecurity, the Danish Refugee Council has partnered with UNHCR to help refugees obtain legal work permits and offer them courses in financial literacy and skills-training.
