The build-up to Friday’s protests began with a video of an Egyptian residing abroad, filming himself with a phone in a room overlooking the sea, accusing the country’s rulers of corruption and squandering billions on vanity real estate projects.
Following the release of Mohamed Ali’s videos, a series of other videos were released accusing Sisi and the armed forces of corruption and demanding that he leave office, a demand that soon developed into calls for protests on Friday. The calls have been popular on social networks in the past few days.
Police arrested activist and lawyer Mahienour al-Massry on Sunday afternoon outside the Supreme State Security Prosecution headquarters in Cairo’s Fifth Settlement neighborhood, according to a Facebook post by Massry’s friend Noha Kamal.
Demonstrations persist in Suez on Saturday as rights organizations continue to track arrests
