The President of the Lebanese Republic, Michel Aoun, announced before the UN General Assembly that the influx of refugees within Lebanese borders has placed the country’s economic sustainability under extreme pressure. He added that the presence of these displaced people has both eroded national infrastructure and increased unemployment, throwing the country into what he refers to as an “economic crisis.” He called upon the international community to address the situation, and provide more economic aid in order to lessen the pressure on Lebanon’s economy.
Number of Migrants Now Growing Faster than the World Population, New UN Figures Show
The UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) released a new report stating that the number of international migrants has reached 272 million, and has therefore accelerated beyond the global population’s growth rate. Additionally, the report explained that migrants now constitute a higher percentage of the world’s population, climbing from 2.8 percent in 2000 to 3.5 percent today. The reported statistics come from an aggregation of international census data obtained by the UN.
Malta Accepts Some Migrants and Refugees from Ocean Viking
After several NGOs accused the Maltese government of propogating “inhuman and arbitrary discrimination,” the island-nation agreed to allow a boat carrying 256 migrants to dock on its shores. The group of migrants had been stranded aboard the rescue ship Ocean Viking which had been rescued from three other vessels located in Malta’s “search-and-rescue zone.” Since the announcement, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) released a statement claiming that only thirty migrants have disembarked, and that 182 migrants “including a newborn, children, and a pregnant woman” remain stranded on the vessel, which the Maltese government has since contested.
Rwanda Agrees to Take in Hundreds of Refugees Stuck in Libya
The Rwandan government has issued a statement announcing that they will accept 500 refugees currently living in Libya. Mainly fleeing nations along the Horn of Africa, these 500 refugees are currently residing within Libyan detention centers as per the agreement between the UN Refugee Agency and the African Union. In addition to severe shortages of food and medical care, allegations of physical abuse have also plagued these detention centers. In response, the Rwandan government has agreed to “receive and provide protection” to many of the 4,700 refugees currently in Libyan custody.
Women drown as migrant boat capsizes off Lampedusa in Italy
At least thirteen women have been declared dead, and twelve others missing, after a boat carrying migrants from Africa capsized off the coast of Lampedusa, just before a rescue vessel arrived. Bad weather and sudden movement of migrants led to the collapse, according to reports, and the rescue vessel managed to arrive just in time to rescue twenty-two individuals. These deaths come after the UN’s report that one thousand migrants have died in their attempts to cross the Mediterranean in the past year alone.
Decongestion of Greek Islands Continues as 700 Refugees and Migrants Move to Mainland
As more and more migrants continue to arrive in the Northeast Aegean Islands, putting pressure on the already overcrowded camps and services, IOM has begun working to move people to the Greek mainland. Additionally, upon arrival, they are provided with social services, shelter, healthcare, and other basic needs. The urgency of the situation recently came to light with the fire at the Moria camp, in which one woman lost her life.
Mediterranean Migrant Arrivals Reach 68,113 in 2019; Deaths Reach 970
IOM reports that just over 68,000 individuals have migrated to Europe via the Mediterranean this year, representing a decline for the same period in 2018. Additionally, the majority of migrants enter through Greece and Spain, with Greece seeing an overall rise in the number of migrant arrivals this year compared to 2018. While Italy, Malta, and Cyprus have seen a much lower number of migrant arrivals, this month is on track to be the greatest for the number of arrivals to Italy (two thousand migrants). Deaths reported stand at fifty-two percent of the total from 2018, including those from several well-documented sea tragedies.
Michel Aoun, the President of Lebanon, spoke to the UN General Assembly on how the presence of Syrian refugees has delayed Lebanon’s ability to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as increased unemployment and other economic problems. He highlighted the fact that the responsibility for displaced persons is an international one, and called on other states to work toward solutions. Additionally, he challenged the idea that returning refugees to Syria presents a security risk, citing the overall satisfaction by the over 250,000 Syrians returned from Lebanon.

Greek Plan to Deport 10,000 Migrants, Move Thousands to Mainland
Facing severe overcrowding within their island-based refugee camps, Greece has announced that it plans to take extreme measures to combat this growing issue. Namely, that the nation plans to deport at least 10,000 individuals by the end of 2020, while relocating many of those remaining in the island camps into the Greek mainland. The Greek government plans to actualize this plan by increasing its naval presence in the Aegean, and closing several asylum centers designed to offer aid. The European Commision has also offered to help support Greece’s efforts, adding that they want to help move asylum-seekers away from the increasingly dangerous island conditions.
Refugee Eviction Causes Fury in Greece
Earlier this month, the Greek police forcibly evacuated 143 undocumented refugees from an abandoned school building in the Exarchia neighborhood of Athens. Most of those evacuated were women and children, many of whom had been previously enrolled within the Greek school system. Their notable absence from the classroom sparked outrage among the parent-body several elementary schools, who have since placed pressure on their government to revoke the evictions.
Migrants in Greece Set Fires at Lesbos Refugee Camp, Killing 1
Frustrated with the conditions of their overcrowded refugee camp, on September 22 a group of migrants set fire to the camp during a police confrontation. One casualty was reported after Greek police officials brought an individual with severe burns to a local hospital. The incident has sparked new conversations both among the Greek population, and within the Greek government about how to improve living conditions within the camps.
Trump Aims to Slash US Refugee Intake, Claiming Backlog
Earlier this month, US President Donald Trump his intention to cap the number of refugees that his administration would permit to resettle within the United States. Lowering the threshold from 30,000 in 2019 to 18,000 during the 2020 fiscal year, this new number will represent the lowest number in the history of the United States’ “modern refugee programme.” The President also enacted an executive order which would require the permission of state and local governments before allowing refugees to resettle with their jurisdictions. Claiming that these measures will help US Immigration Agencies work to repair the severely backlogged legal immigration pathways, the US State Department has described these measures as necessary to overhaul the nation’s entire immigration system.
Ten Syrians Posing as Volleyball Team Arrested at Athens Airport
Dressed in official volleyball uniforms, a group of ten Syrian refugees attempted to travel to Zurich from the Athens Airport. After a confrontation with the police, the group was found without any formal national identification, and they were later arrested and taken into custody.
Recep Tayyip Erdogan Proposes ‘Safe Zone’ for Refugees in Syria
Turkish President Erdogan has advocated for the enforcement of a “safe-zone” in Northern Syria, which he claims will protect up to 3 million Syrians while simultaneously lessening immigration-induced tension within Turkey. His proposal faces potent opposition, mainly from the Kurds who view his policy-proposal as a hidden an offensive land-grabbing tactic. Erdogan has appealed to Russia, Iran, and the United States to help him turn this region into a center of repatriation for Syrian citizens, claiming that “if we can extend the depth of this safe zone to Raqqa and Deir ez-Zor line, we can increase the number of Syrians who will return from Turkey, Europe, and other parts of the world.”
Turkey's plan to settle refugees in northeast Syria alarms allies
With Turkey planning to attack northeast Syria and move refugees into the “safe” zone, some of its allies have expressed concern over both the military action and movement of refugees into an area surrounded by conflict. Erdogan promises to bring basic infrastructure and provide services to those in the “safe” zone, but some see this as merely an attempt to ‘voluntarily’ remove refugees from Turkey. Additionally, concerns have been raised that the region to which they will be relocated in predominantly Kurdish, despite the fact that the refugees are mostly Arab and Sunni Muslim.
Under Pressure, New Zealand Ends a Refugee Policy Branded Racist
New Zealand recently ended a decade-old policy by which refugees from the Middle East and North Africa could only be resettled if they had family ties to New Zealand, in addition to a quota that required they be only 14% of the accepted group. This policy came under renewed attack in the wake of the Christchurch Massacre, and led Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to depart with the governing coalition on this matter. Now people from this region will make up 15% of the accepted group, and the requirement for family connections has been removed. This also represents a stark departure from the recent policies of both the United States and Australia, which have worked to close their doors to more migrants.
Spain: Rights of Asylum Seekers Deteriorating at Border with Morocco
The Spanish government has recently begun enforcing “border procedures” in its enclave communities along the Spanish-Moroccan border, making it more difficult for asylum seekers to reach Spanish territory. This policy, known as “express,” had not been previously implemented in Spanish enclaves, and comes after a group of over one hundred asylum seekers attempted to enter the Spanish border en masse. The policy has been criticized for not providing enough time to properly look over claims for asylum, and none of the individuals thus far have been granted asylum under the “express” procedure.
Government breaks vital commitment to supporting thousands of vulnerable refugees
In the event of a no-deal Brexit, the UK government announced it will remove millions of pounds of pre-allocated funding to refugees and migrants. This would greatly impact their ability to access social services, including education, healthcare, and housing. The Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund, created by the EU in 2014, was created for EU member states to exist integration of non-EU migrants; through Brexit, however, the UK risks leaving almost 2000 individuals without a vital safety net. While the Government has promised to continue providing for other streams of EU funds, it has not offered the same guarantee for these services essential to refugees and migrants.

Germany: Integration of Refugees into Labour market Deemed Success -- With Limitations
Annete Widdman-Mauz, Germany’s government commissioner for Integration, has announced the successful integration of German refugees into the German workforce. In her statement, she declared that deliberate efforts of corporations to provide vocational training to refugees and migrants have been working, for now over 399,000 asylum-seekers from Syria, Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran are currently employed. Despite the positive news, German economists continue to report that the supply of low skill refugee-labor continues to surpass market demand.
Greece: ESTIA Accommodation Capacity Weekly UPdate (As of 10 September 2019)
The summary has provided some basic statistics which shed light on the current state of these Greek refugee camps. According to the report, the current population of refugees has almost reached the camps’ official capacity, yielding an occupancy rate of 97.7%. These numbers forecast troubling conditions, for resources available will not be able to sustain the growing number of people who rely on them.
Family-Based Care Supports, Protects Unaccompanied Migrant Children in Europe
The IOM has recently reported that last year almost 20,000 unaccompanied migrant children came to Europe in search of asylum. Though this number has fallen since its high in 2015, in which over 90,000 unaccompanied minors fled to Europe, the statistics remain troubling given the inadequate governmental infrastructure to protect and care for them. In response, the IOM has created a new program called Fostering Across Borders (FAB) which seeks to train officials to help accommodate the needs of these children.
LGBTQ Syrian refugees force to choose between their families and identity
Although little data exists on the numbers of the LGBTQ Syrian refugees, or the unique challenges they face, stories reveal the ways in which they often lose family support upon coming out. Many of these individuals choose to come out only upon leaving home, seeing their new host countries as places of relative safety for an LGBTQ individual. In the process, however, many report ostracization from family units, a vital source of support for those in conditions of displacement. Families see these children as a shame to the entire unit, and express the ways this affects their role in a broader community, especially in a country like Syria, where there are no reported organizations providing support to LGBTQ individuals.
U.S. Withdrawal from Northeast Syria Could Displace Hundreds of Thousands
The president of Refugees International recently issued a statement in response to President Trump’s announcement that the United States would be removing troops from the Turkey-Syria border. This announcement has come under much criticism for its potential to destabilize advances made in the region, as well as for leaving the Syrian Kurds vulnerable to Turkish attacks. The president of Refugees International expressed his own concern for the change, highlighting how new conflicts can open and more individuals can be newly displaced as a result.
South Sudanese teacher dedicates his life in exile to refugees of all ages
Teacher Koat Reath’s dedication to his South Sudanese students, while being displaced in Ethiopia, is demonstrated through his enthusiasm in the classroom. Only two-thirds of South Sudanese refugees continue primary education in Ethiopia, and even less have access to secondary education. School materials can be hard to come by, and teachers tend to be low in morale due to overcrowded classes and low wages. Koat, himself a South Sudanese refugee, also works tirelessly to offer tutoring to adults in the community, seeing a commitment to education as an investment in the future.
Children in Morocco Eye Migration to Spain for a Better Life
The Spanish-Moroccan border at Ceuta has seen an influx of young Moroccan males looking to migrate to Spain in hopes of a better life. While overall irregular migration is down, Spain has seen a surge in the number of Moroccans irregularly crossing the border due to a variety of economic and social policies. As a result, Spain has cracked down on its border policy and Morocco recently implemented a compulsory draft in an effort to increase social cohesion. Nonetheless, so long as the country’s economic problems remain unaddressed, thousands of boys continue the border crossing despite numerous failed attempts.
Fighting Climate Change: Helping Ethiopian Farmers Adapt to Drought and Flooding
The small Ethiopian village of Berebeyu, which lies at the confluence of tributary rivers, has recently seen an uptick in the number of people emigrating to the Gulf and other regions in search of jobs. This comes after a prolonged drought in the region, which has historically been susceptible to drought, floods, and mudslides. The demand for arable land far exceeds supply, and as a result prices of land are on the rise. Older members of the community note how younger generations try to irregularly migrate to other regions for work, but often are deported back to Berebeyu. IOM, partnering with a local organization, has worked to help fertilize the land and expand access to water sources as a means of addressing the root causes of migration.
Malta: Asylum-seeker disembarkation deal shows a more humane approach is possible
A deal reached today between the Governments of Italy, France, Germany, and Malta will hopefully put an end to leaving migrants stranded at sea while governments work to decide if and when they will be allowed to disembark. While the details still remain unclear, the plan is to allow migrants stranded in the Central Mediterranean to immediately be brought into Malta to await further decisions. Malta had cracked down on its acceptance of migrants over the past few months in response to overcrowding at migrant reception centers. Amnesty International, while highlighting the progress made through this recent deal, has also called for increased attention to the poor conditions in these migrant detention centers, and the long periods of detainment faced by many.
Turkey is Becoming a Hub of Innovative Solutions for the Problems Faced by Refugees
At the “Demo Day” for Turkey’s “Sustainable Development Goals Impact Accelerator,” 9 startups from around the world were able to present on technological solutions for Turkey’s refugee crisis. Turkey is currently home to the world’s largest population of refugees, and believes that startups such as these can be a way to move the country toward Sustainable Development Goals by seeing refugees as an asset, rather than a burden. Through this presentation, done before a select crowd of private and public investors, Turkey hopes to stimulate innovative solutions for displaced persons around the world.
Life-saving program offers safe path to Italy for refugees
Italy’s Humanitarian Corridors program is the regional winner for Europe for UNHCR’s Nansen Refugee Award, which honors groups and individuals helping those in positions of vulnerability due to statelessness or displacement. This program, sponsored by a variety of religious organizations in concert with the government, works to provide safe and regular pathways to Italy for a number of select migrant families deemed most in need. These individuals are given free social services to aid in integration, including legal aid and language courses, for their first year in Italy. In addition, the program’s sponsors work to help them achieve legal refugee status, which has thus far been awarded to nearly all applicants. In the four years since this program was implemented nearly 2000 individuals have been safely resettled in Italy, and it has offered a model for other countries to implement humanitarian corridors of their own.
