ASI Call for Interns, Summer 2020
This is a call for interns in various positions at the Arab Studies Institute for the Summer of 2020. The Arab Studies Institute is the umbrella organization for the Arab Studies Journal, Jadaliyya, Quilting Point, Forum on Arab and Muslim Affairs (FAMA), and Tadween Publishing.
Below are the specific positions available, as well as general needs and availabilities for interns at the Institute. All ASI team members volunteer their time to one extent or another. “Internships” fit into this formula during the initial internship period with the possibility of a stipend henceforth.
Applicants need not be based in the Washington, D.C .or Beirut, Lebanon area. All internship positions are virtual unless explicitly stated otherwise.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning on May 15th.
JADALIYYA
Arabian Peninsula Page Media Roundup Coordinator
The Arabian Peninsula page is seeking an intern who can help work with the Arabian Peninsula team on the English language portion of its weekly media roundup. This roundup focuses on themes and locales within the Arabian Peninsula, collecting important news, current events, and incidences that affect the AP. Experience living in or studying the AP is preferred but not required.
Internship responsibilities will include:

Curate and annotate the media roundup and in collaboration with the Arabic AP Media Roundup Editor

Perform basic copyediting on all roundup articles.

Maintaining a routine weekly schedule for roundup posts.

Coordinate with the page editor for strategies and content.
Law and Conflict Media Roundup Coordinator
The Law and Conflict page is seeking an intern who can help work with the team on its weekly media roundup. This roundup focuses on themes materials circulating about law and conflict in the region from a wide variety of opinions and approaches. The intern will be responsible for collecting important news, current events, and incidences related to law and conflict.
Internship responsibilities will include:

Resistance, Subversion, and Mobilization Page Media Roundup Coordinator
The Resistance, Subversion, and Mobilization roundup editor will be responsible for managing, scheduling, and augmenting the material for a specific monthly roundup, in coordination with the page editors. This topic is specific to grassroots mobilization, acts of resistance, social movements, etc. that occur across the Middle East and North Africa. Knowledge of Arabic is preferred but not required.
Internship responsibilities will include:

Media Page Media Roundup Coordinator
The Media page is seeking an intern who can help work with the Media team on its weekly media roundup. This roundup focuses on themes materials circulating about the media and reflects a wide variety of opinions and approaches. The intern will be responsible for collecting important news, current events, and incidences that affect the media industry. Knowledge of Arabic is preferred.
Internship responsibilities will include:

KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION PROJECT
KPP (Knowledge Production Project) Researchers
Interns for the Knowledge Production Project will join one of eight databases within the project, each with its own mission and procedure for examining and cataloging the production of knowledge on the Middle East.
Internship responsibilities will differ by database: Peer-Reviewed Articles, Books, Think Tank, Reports, Middle East in Cyberspace, Book Reviews, Dissertations, Films, TV Shows, Documentaries, and Translated Books.
In general, internship responsibilities will include:

Researching and cataloging sources of knowledge production (per the databases above.), and evaluating the content and method of production in different realms. Prior experience with spreadsheets and data entry would be helpful.

Work closely with the coordinator of their respective database to decide upon new paths of research and potential leads for developing the project.

Interns will be encouraged to write a 3-5 page report at the end of their internship that addresses knowledge production on the Middle East and/or Muslim World. Specific writing prompts to be worked out with their supervisor.
STATUS
Status Audio Journal Video/Audio Editors
Status Audio-Visual Magazine is seeking interns who have experience editing audio and video to help produce shows, interviews, and events on the website.
Internship responsibilities will include:

Edit audio and video files for ongoing series such as The Nerdiest Show.
-
Edit audio and video files for upcoming magazine releases.
-
Assist the Status team in keeping up a schedule of audio-visual production.
FORUM ON ARAB AND MUSLIM AFFAIRS
Media Studies Researcher
FAMA serves as ASI’s research arm. FAMA currently houses nine projects and four initiatives. The forum is in the process of establishing a Media Studies Project and is in search of a Media Studies Researcher. The researcher should be at least a senior in college, ideally majoring in either Media and Communication or Middle East Studies. Arabic language proficiency is preferred, but not required.
In general, internship responsibilities will include:

Researching the intersection of media studies and Arab / Middle East studies.

Work closely with the Media project director to establish the goals of the project.
Syria Researcher
FAMA serves as ASI’s research arm. FAMA currently houses nine projects and four initiatives. The forum is in the process of establishing a Syria Project and is in search of a Syria Studies Researcher. The researcher should be at least a senior in college, ideally majoring or concentrating in Middle East Studies. Applicants should be familiar with Syrian affairs. Advanced Arabic language proficiency is required.
In general, internship responsibilities will include:

Researching Syria’s political, economic, social, and military developments.

Work closely with the Syria project director to establish the goals of the project.
Critical Security Studies Researcher
FAMA serves as ASI’s research arm. FAMA currently houses nine projects and four initiatives. The forum is in the process of establishing a Critical Security Studies Project and is in search of a CSS Researcher. The researcher should be at least a senior in college, ideally majoring or concentrating in Middle East or Security Studies. Applicants should be familiar with or have previous experience in the field of CSS.
In general, internship responsibilities will include:

Researching developments in the field of critical security studies, especially as it intersects with Middle East studies.

Work closely with the CSS project director to establish the goals of the project.
MESPI
MESPI (Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative) Research Coordinator
The Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative (MESPI) is a project of FAMA, ASI's research arm. MESPI is a curated interactive platform for Middle East Studies resources specifically tailored to the needs of teachers, researchers, and students.
Research Coordinator responsibilities will include:

Working with the MEPSI team on researching and developing various learning modules

Collaborating across ASI organizations to produce teaching materials across all platforms
MESPI (Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative) Peer-Reviewed Articles Review
The Middle East Studies Pedagogy Initiative (MESPI) is a project of FAMA, ASI's research arm. MESPI is a curated interactive platform for Middle East Studies resources specifically tailored to the needs of teachers, researchers, and students.
Internship responsibilities will include:

Mining and cataloging peer-reviewed articles on or about the Middle East
-
Analyzing samples of data and identifying trends in knowledge production around a specific country or topic
