Opinion & Commentary
As America rages, the Middle East watches with surprise -- and some schadenfreude, Los Angeles Times (3 June 2020)
Nabih Bulos draws attention to the parallels between the heavy-handed police response to the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement in the US and the authorities’ often aggressive response to the uprisings that have rocked the Middle East over the past decade. He quotes journalist Rami Khouri, who has referred to the civil unrest in the US an “American intifada.” He also noted how Lebanese activists have published a document with tips for Americans on how to handle police violence.
Towards a global intifada, Al-Jazeera (5 June 2020)
Rami Khouri argues that the George Floyd protests in the United States are a seminal development in modern American history. He reflects on his personal experience through uprising in Israel-Palestine and several Arab countries, and draws attention to the similarities between protests in the Middle East and the United States. He concludes that from the US to the Middle East, people are rising up to reform or remove racist and militarized governments, and they won’t quit until they succeed.
Black Lives Matter and lessons from Palestine, Al-Jazeera (24 June 2020)
Yoav Litvin draws parallels between the fight against anti-Black racism in the US and the ongoing Palestinian struggle for freedom. He points out that the white supremacist, settler-colonial projects in the US and Israel share core tenets and oppressive tactics. He concludes that leaders of the current protests against police brutality and systemic racism can engage in a fruitful exchange of knowledge with the Palestinian resistance.
In parts of the Middle East, police reforms are key to restoring human dignity, The National (25 June 2020)
Kareem Shaheen argues that comparisons between the police crackdown on anti-racist protesters in the US and the response of security forces loyal to totalitarian leaders like Bashar Al-Assad in Syria to protesters during the Arab Spring are over the top. He states that it is high time for the reform of law enforcement in several Arab countries.
