Internship Opportunities: Arab Studies Institute (Fall 2020)
This is a limited call for interns in various positions at the Arab Studies Institute. The Arab Studies Institute is the umbrella organization for the Arab Studies Journal, Jadaliyya, Quilting Point, Forum on Arab and Muslim Affairs (FAMA), and Tadween Publishing.
Below are the specific projects at the Institute with available internship positions. ASI internships represent temporary (3-6 month) assignments as part of any number of ASI projects and teams within. All ASI team members, whether interns or more long-term team members volunteer their time to one extent or another. As a solidarity-based organization, we commit ourselves to professional mentorship, skills acquisition, and leadership opportunities. We also work with interns to provide feedback on potential publications as well as job and graduate school applications. We are also committed to serving as long-term references and recommendation letter writers.
Applicants must be willing to commit to working with our team for three months at a minimum, for roughly 10-15 hours per week. Applicants need not be based in the Washington, D.C .or Beirut, Lebanon area. All internship positions are virtual unless explicitly stated otherwise.

ARAB STUDIES INSTITUTE
Social Media Coordinator
ASI is seeking an intern to design, curate, and post content on ASI’s various social media platforms, especially Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Experience with Canva, Promo, and Photoshop is required. Knowledge of Arabic is preferred but not required.
Internship responsibilities will include:
- Designing social media campaigns for newly published Jadaliyya, Status, and MESPI content.
- Establishing and adhering to a posting schedule.
- Taking the initiative to promote ASI events and materials.
JADALIYYA
Internship: Radio-Broadcaster - English
Jadaliyya is seeking an intern to help develop an audio component of Jadaliyya. The root of this audio component would be the recording and distribution of various Jadaliyya articles. Applicants should be interested in radio-broadcast. Applicants must be willing to read and record audio-content. Familiarity with recording software is required.
Responsibilities will include:
- Collaborating with Jadaliyya’s administrative team to identify popular Jadaliyya articles
- Recording themselves reading articles in a clear and engaging manner
- Editing said recordings with the Status/الوضع team
Internship: Radio-Broadcaster - Arabic

- Recording themselves reading articles in a clear and engaging manner, in Arabic
- Editing said recordings with the Status team
FORUM ON ARAB AND MUSLIM AFFAIRS
Internship: Research Coordinator
The Forum on Arab and Muslim Affairs is seeking a research coordinator who can organize and develop FAMA’s various research projects. Applicants should be a strong leader with impeccable organizational skills and research experience.
KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION PROJECT
Internship: Books Reviews Database Researchers
The Knowledge Production Project is seeking a research assistant to work on the Books Reviews Database. Experience with data entry is preferred, but not required for this position.
Responsibilities for the Books Reviews Database research assistant will include:
- Researching and cataloging Books Reviews relate to the Middle East, and evaluating the content and method of production in different realms.
- Work closely with the database coordinator to decide upon new paths of research and potential leads for developing the project.
STATUS / الوضع
Video/Audio Editors
Status is seeking interns who have experience editing audio and video to help produce shows, interviews, and events on the website.
Internship responsibilities will include:
- Edit audio and video files for ongoing series such as The Nerdiest Show.
- Edit audio and video files for upcoming magazine releases.
- Assist the Status team in keeping up a schedule of audio-visual production.
Internship: Video/Audio Producers
Status is seeking interns to assist in the production of the ASI Monthly Broadcast. Applicants should have an interest in broadcast production and be familiar with basic audio/visual editing and streaming tools such as Premier and eCam Live.
Applicants who are available to occasionally work out of the DMV area will be given preference.
Internship responsibilities will include:
- Soliciting and organizing ASI project content for monthly broadcasts
- Assist in script writing
