For Lebanon, the only way out is either revolution or reform
Atlantic Council (10 August 2020)
What the Lebanese people began protesting in October 2019 is not a “simple case of financial mismanagement, but a fundamentally flawed system that superimposes sectarianism, feudalism, and corruption on every decision made at every level of government.” The mass protests that are referred to mostly as “hirak” (movement) but that refers to itself as “thawra” (revolution) are thus directed at a fundamental change in the governing structure of Lebanon. The only alternative to revolution is reform from above. However, both require fundamental critique, unity and strategic vision.

In the MENA region, the situation after the revolutions of 2011 and 2019 resembles that of the Soviet Bloc in the 1980s. The lobbying against reforms is successful and the region has seen a repressive and authoritarian backlash, but it seems the elites’ will fail to adapt which will lead to a “full-scale political collapse”, that will then make way for a transformation of the system. The central demand in the emancipatory movements in the middle east is for accountability of the policy makers.
