Sheikh Jarrah, Al Aqsa Mosque, Gaza: We are seeing the violence on the news, and reading the biased and ignorant reporting in the mainstream media. We know it’s an unjust conflict with an asymmetrical distribution of power and resources. But what exactly does it mean to say that Israel is an apartheid state? How does the Israeli settler-colonial regime function and maintain its rule over the Palestinian people? And how can activists in the U.S. impact our country’s policies to best support the Palestinians?
Lower Manhattan Political Education is pleased to host Mouin Rabbani, a distinguished independent analyst and researcher who has published and spoken widely on Middle East politics, and is an editor for Jadaliyya, an e-zine produced by the Arab Studies Institute. Rabbani will help us more fully understand the political, economic, and historical background of Israeli rule, the purpose and structure of international “humanitarian” aid, and the immediate causes of the current conflagration in Jerusalem and elsewhere. Indeed, as we’ll discuss, the recent events in Jerusalem are a microcosm of the larger Zionist project, wherein Israel uses a complex set of administrative, legal, and quasi-legal mechanisms to systematically displace Palestinians, in addition to the brute force of military occupation.

Mouin Rabbani has published and commented widely on Palestinian affairs, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the contemporary Middle East. He was previously Senior Analyst Middle East and Special Advisor on Israel-Palestine with the International Crisis Group, and head of political affairs with the Office of the United Nations Special Envoy for Syria. He is Co-Editor of Jadaliyya Ezine.
