Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and Operations Policy Center: How the Assad Regime Systematically Diverts Tens of Millions in Aid (20 October 2021)
According to a new report, the Assad regime has been siphoning millions of dollars in aid money by forcing agencies to use a distorted exchange rate. The report indicates that in 2020, the central bank made $60m by pocketing $0.51 of every aid dollar sent to Syria, making UN contracts one of the most lucrative streams of revenue for the regime.
Human Rights Watch (HRW): “Our Lives are Like Death: Syrian Refugee Returns from Lebanon and Jordan (20 October 2021)
A HRW report indicates that Syrian refugees who voluntarily returned to Syria between 2017 and 2021 experienced severe human rights abuses by the Syrian government and affiliated militias, including torture, extra-judicial killings, sexual violence, and kidnappings as well as immense difficulty meeting basic needs. Based on these findings HRW maintains that refugees should not be returned, calling upon host nations to halt refugee returns at this time.
