Obstacles to Public Engagement among Women in Northwest Syria

The 6.6 million internally displaced persons (IDP) in Syria represent the largest internally displaced population in the world. Women face distinct challenges relating to issues such as sexual harassment and limitations on their freedom of movement. Many women had a high degree of interest in local politics but had difficulties advocating within available public institutions. In particular, a lack of women employees in the local government councils and the criminal justice system significantly reduced their engagement with these institutions. 

As such, Start Point's upcoming field report entitled "Partners, Not Only in Suffering: Obstacles to Public Engagement among Women in Northwest Syria” determines the key challenges that women in North West Syria face to engage effectively in the public spheres in their local communities.
