On the US publication of Alaa Abd el-Fattah's You Have Not Yet Been Defeated (Seven Stories Press), please join us for a conversation with Dr. Laila Soueif (Cairo University) and Nora Younis (al-Manassa) about Alaa, his case, and incarceration in Egypt.
Laila Soueif is an activist and Professor of Mathematics at Cairo University. She is a founder of the March 9th Movement for University Autonomy in Egypt. She and her family fight against Egypt's political repressions. She is the mother of Alaa Abd el-Fattah.
Nora Younis is founder and editor-in-chief of the independent journalism platform Al-Manassa.
Owain Lawson is Visiting Assistant Professor of Modern Middle Eastern History at Oberlin College. He serves as co-editor of Arab Studies Journal and co-editor of the Environment page on Jadaliyya. He received his PhD in History from Columbia University in 2021, and holds degrees from the American University and Concordia University (Montréal). His writing and research has appeared in Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, Arab Studies Quarterly, The Cairo Review of Global Affairs, and Jadaliyya.
